Cameron first talked about wanting multiple sequels many years ago. After the first Avatar became a major hit, he confirmed plans to continue the story. As the team added more films to the schedule and created new technology for underwater performance capture, the project took longer than expected. Because of this, the release timeline kept moving as the crew worked on writing, planning and effects.
Production on Fire and Ash began in New Zealand in 2017, filmed at the same time as The Way of Water. Shooting finally wrapped in 2020 after several years of work. Even though filming ended long ago, the movie went through many delays before it was ready for theaters. It premiered at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on December 1, and will be released in the United States on December 19.
The film’s story continues after Jake and Neytiri’s family settles with the Metkayina clan. They are still dealing with the loss of Neteyam when they cross paths with a new Na’vi group known as the Mangkwan clan, or the Ash People. Their leader, Varang, chooses to join forces with Quaritch, which pushes the conflict on Pandora into a darker and more intense direction. These story details come from official plot information released by the creators.
Two more sequels are also in the works, with plans for release in 2029 and 2031.
With the new clip now out, fans are getting more hints about the tone of the movie and the challenges the characters will face. It adds more excitement as the release date gets closer.
