The Clayface movie is officially moving forward and it’s shaping up to be one of DC Studios’ boldest projects yet.

The film has been in discussion for a while, starting when filmmaker Mike Flanagan met with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran back in 2023 to pitch his idea. Flanagan wanted to bring something different to the character, exploring him as more than just a typical villain. By the end of 2024, DC gave the project the go-ahead, with Flanagan working on the script.

Peter Safran has already hinted at the type of film fans can expect. He said the tone will lean into body horror and compared it to David Cronenberg’s 1986 classic The Fly. With that in mind, it’s clear this movie will not follow the usual superhero formula.

Flanagan, however, will not be directing. He stepped aside due to commitments on other projects, including The Exorcist and a Carrie miniseries.

Instead, James Watkins is directing the film, while writer Hossein Amini is revising the script. Matt Reeves is attached as a producer through his company, 6th & Idaho Productions.

Casting news has also been rolling in. Earlier this year, Tom Rhys Harries was confirmed to play the lead role as Clayface. New set photos that surfaced this week revealed that actor Eddie Marsan has joined the cast as well, though his role hasn’t been revealed yet.

Yesterday’s photos also ended speculation about Robert Pattinson’s Batman crossing into the DCU. The police cars on set had a different Gotham City Police Department logo, making it clear that Reeves’ Batman world is separate.

Naomi Ackie will play Caitlin Bates in the movie, with Max Minghella cast as her fiancé John. Reports suggest the story will follow an actor who suffers a terrible injury when he is attacked by a gangster.

Desperate to fix his face, he turns to a shady scientist. At first, the treatment seems like a miracle, but things quickly take a horrifying turn. As one source put it, “It wouldn’t be a horror movie if the story ended right there, would it?”

Filming has already started at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, England. Clayface is scheduled to release in theaters on September 11, 2026.

This movie sounds like a big gamble for DC, but it could pay off. The mix of horror and superhero elements makes it stand out, and with a cast like this, it has a lot of potential. What do you think—are you excited to see Clayface finally get his own movie? Share your thoughts in the comments.
