Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa shared insight into the company’s approach to film projects during their annual general meeting.
“Rather than simply licensing our IP to film production companies, we are taking a proactive approach where Nintendo itself is deeply involved in production and makes investments as needed. This approach allows us to maintain a strong commitment to the quality of the final product,” he said. While Furukawa didn’t mention Donkey Kong directly, he confirmed that several unannounced movie projects are already in the works.
The timing of this potential Donkey Kong movie fits with Nintendo’s other film plans. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is confirmed for April 3, 2026, and a live-action Legend of Zelda film is scheduled for May 2027. If the Donkey Kong movie follows this pattern, fans could see the classic ape swinging onto the big screen just a year after Zelda.
It seems Nintendo is carefully planning its film releases while staying closely involved in production, which has fans optimistic about the quality of the projects.
