Denis Villeneuve’s Arrakis saga is heading for its finale, and the promotional campaign for ‘Dune: Part Three’ is ramping up as the release date gets closer. The film adapts Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel ‘Dune Messiah’ and is set nearly 2 decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium. Villeneuve returns to direct the closing chapter of his trilogy.

Warner Bros. and Legendary have kept fans fed for months. The campaign began in March with 9 character posters and a debut teaser, followed in July by a second trailer and the return of Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho. More recently, the studio released a final trailer and a new batch of character posters carrying the tagline “The Epic Conclusion.”

The newest piece shows Paul surrounded by his inner circle. Shared by Film Updates, the promotional art places Timothée Chalamet’s Paul at the center, with a shaved head and a stern stare, framed by a glowing sun-like halo. Zendaya’s Chani and Momoa’s blade-wielding Duncan Idaho flank him from above, while Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan and Anya Taylor-Joy’s knife-holding Alia Atreides stand in front, all washed in warm desert gold above the film’s minimalist title.

Every face on the poster has a big role in the story. Chalamet’s Paul is now the Padishah Emperor, and the trailers have already shown that power hasn’t been kind to him. In one, Chani reminds Paul that he promised never to take power in his own name, while Duncan Idaho notes that the Lisan al-Gaib has conquered the galaxy and destroyed thousands of worlds.

Momoa’s return is one of the more intriguing developments, since Duncan very clearly died in ‘Part One’. Some cast listings credit Momoa as Hayt, which hints at how the character comes back.

Pugh’s Irulan is now the chronicler of Paul’s history and accomplishments, despite being his wife in name only. She is also Bene Gesserit, and ‘Part Two’ made clear she may be acting under the Sisterhood’s orders.

The biggest newcomer to the poster is Paul’s younger sister. Taylor-Joy appeared briefly in ‘Part Two’ in one of Paul’s visions while the character was still unborn, and ‘Part Three’ marks her proper on-screen debut as Alia. The actress has described Alia as carrying both an intense blessing and a curse, and the Bene Gesserit consider her an abomination.

The supporting cast is just as stacked. Robert Pattinson joins as the villain Scytale, Rebecca Ferguson returns as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem is back as Stilgar, and Josh Brolin returns as Gurney Halleck. Isaach de Bankolé plays Farok, while Ida Brooke and Nakoa-Wolf Momoa play Ghanima and Leto II, characters that hint at the franchise’s future.

Excitement is already running high. IMAX 70mm tickets reportedly sold out instantly, with resale prices climbing past $1,000. The first 2 films earned around $1.1 billion worldwide combined.

The finale also faces serious competition. ‘Dune: Part Three’ opens in theaters and IMAX on December 18, the same day as Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which sets up one of the biggest box office face-offs in recent memory. For Villeneuve, it’s also the end of an era. Once the trilogy wraps, he moves straight on to directing the next James Bond film for Amazon MGM Studios.
