Apple TV+ is getting ready to bring back a familiar holiday favorite, but with a twist.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streamer is developing a limited series based on the 2006 romantic comedy The Holiday, which was written and directed by Nancy Meyers. But Meyers herself has nothing to do with this new version, in fact, she says she didn’t even know it was happening.

“News to me,” Meyers wrote on Instagram. “Imagine my surprise when I opened Instagram and this was the first post I saw.”

The original Holiday starred Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black in a cozy Christmas romance about two heartbroken women, one in England, one in Los Angeles, who swap homes for the holidays and end up finding love in unexpected places. The film was a big box office success, earning over $200 million worldwide, and has become a seasonal favorite for many viewers.

In this new series, the story will feature fresh characters instead of bringing back the original cast. Like the movie, it will follow one American woman and one British woman, each living completely different lives, who decide to swap houses for the holidays. Naturally, love finds a way into their lives during the exchange. Casting for the two leads has not yet been announced.

Krissie Ducker, known for her work as a writer’s assistant on the British comedy Catastrophe, will write and executive produce the show through Left Bank Pictures. Rob Delaney, who co-created and starred in Catastrophe, is attached as a consultant on the project. If the series goes forward, it will be a return to Apple TV+ for Delaney, who also starred in the first season of Bad Monkey.

Meyers’ original film was never meant to be a “holiday movie” in her eyes. She has previously said that she didn’t set out to make a Christmas classic, but the film has become one anyway. Every December, The Holiday returns to streaming services and TV schedules, cementing its place in many viewers’ seasonal traditions.

The 2006 movie, co-produced by Bruce A. Block, was filmed in both California and England. Kate Winslet played Iris, a journalist living in a quaint English cottage, while Cameron Diaz played Amanda, a high-powered Los Angeles businesswoman. Jude Law appeared as Graham, Iris’s charming brother, and Jack Black played Miles, a film composer. The cast also included Eli Wallach, Shannyn Sossamon, Edward Burns, and Rufus Sewell.

When it was released, the film got mixed reviews from critics but strong love from audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 51% rating, while on Metacritic it scored 52 out of 100. CinemaScore audiences gave it an A−. Many reviewers found it predictable, but audiences embraced its warmth, humor, and feel-good spirit.

Apple TV+ has not shared when the new series will arrive, but with the concept, the romantic tone, and the holiday setting, it’s likely to draw in both fans of the original and new viewers who enjoy cozy seasonal love stories. For now, fans will have to wait and see how the new Holiday will compare to the classic.
