New James Bond Movie Finds Its Director — Could This Be the Best Bond Yet?
Denis Villeneuve is officially set to direct the next James Bond movie, Amazon MGM Studios announced on Wednesday. After years of speculation, the filmmaker behind the Dune films and Blade Runner 2049 is taking on one of cinema’s most iconic characters. This marks the first new Bond film since 2021’s No Time to Die, which wrapped up Daniel Craig’s time as 007.
The announcement comes after months of guessing about who would land the director’s job. Villeneuve had been one of the big names rumored, along with others like Edgar Wright, Alfonso Cuarón, and Edward Berger. According to the studio, producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman will be on board for this project, with Tanya Lapointe serving as executive producer.
Amazon has had full creative control of the Bond franchise since a 2022 deal when it bought MGM Studios for $8.5 billion. But even with the rights in place, no new film had moved forward until now, likely due to creative disagreements with the longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. That finally changed when Amazon and the Bond producers reached a new partnership in early 2024.
Villeneuve’s hiring surprised some people, especially since he’s currently working on the third Dune movie, which is set to come out in December 2026. He’s also attached to other projects, including a Cleopatra film and a sci-fi adaptation of Rendezvous with Rama. Still, Amazon clearly sees him as the right person to take Bond in a new direction.
In a statement, Villeneuve said directing a Bond movie is something he’s dreamed about since he was a kid. “Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.”
Amazon MGM’s studio chief Mike Hopkins praised Villeneuve in the announcement. “We are honored that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond’s next chapter. He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself. From Blade Runner 2049 to Arrival to the Dune films, he has delivered compelling worlds, dynamic visuals, complex characters, and—most importantly—the immersive storytelling that global audiences yearn to experience in theaters. James Bond is in the hands of one of today’s greatest filmmakers and we cannot wait to get started on 007’s next adventure.”
Pascal and Heyman, who are producing the movie, also shared their excitement. “Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it’s ours, too. We are lucky to be in the hands of this extraordinary filmmaker.”
Villeneuve has already proven his ability to make bold and visually stunning blockbusters. His Dune movies brought in over a billion dollars worldwide and won several Oscars. Before that, he directed Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, which were also praised for their style and depth.
With this announcement, the future of James Bond looks to be heading in a new and exciting direction. There’s no word yet on who will play Bond or when filming will start, but this is a major first step toward the next chapter.
