New Look at ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Revealed Ahead of January Premiere on HBO Max
A new poster for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has just been released, giving fans of Game of Thrones a fresh look at the upcoming prequel series.
The show, which will stream on HBO and Max in January 2026, takes viewers back to Westeros about 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire.

Based on George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, the series follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a humble hedge knight, and his young squire, Egg, who later becomes King Aegon V Targaryen.
HBO has described the story as a grounded, character-driven tale set in the same world fans already know, but long before the rise of the Iron Throne conflicts seen in Game of Thrones.
Peter Claffey plays Ser Duncan the Tall, while Dexter Sol Ansell stars as Egg. The cast also includes Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen.
The show was created by Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin, with Parker also serving as a writer. Parker was previously involved in House of the Dragon, another Game of Thrones prequel. George R. R. Martin is also on board as creator and executive producer, ensuring the show stays true to his original stories.
According to HBO, the project was first developed in early 2021, with the network officially giving it the green light in April 2023.
Director Owen Harris, known for his work on Black Mirror, directed the first three episodes and helped set the tone for the series. Sarah Adina Smith directed the remaining three episodes, completing the first six-part season.
Casting took place throughout 2024, and production began that June in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the same location where much of Game of Thrones was filmed. Filming wrapped in September 2024, according to sources close to HBO.
With its January 2026 premiere date confirmed, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is shaping up to be one of HBO’s biggest fantasy releases of the year.
