The Running Man is a dystopian action thriller based on the 1982 novel by Stephen King, who wrote it under the name Richard Bachman.

This will be the second time the book has been adapted for the screen, following the 1987 version. Edgar Wright co-wrote, produced, and directed the new film, bringing his unique style to the story.

The movie follows a man known as “The Runner,” who must survive 30 days of being hunted by deadly Hunters to win a billion dollars. Glen Powell stars as Ben Richards, the Runner, while Josh Brolin plays Dan Killian, the show’s producer. Colman Domingo is Bobby Thompson, the host of the gameshow, and Jayme Lawson appears as Sheila Richards, Ben’s wife.

Michael Cera plays Elton Parrakis, a rebel who helps Ben, and Emilia Jones is Amelia Williams, a civilian taken hostage during the chase. Other cast members include William H. Macy, David Zayas, Katy O’Brian, Daniel Ezra, Karl Glusman, Simon Haines, and Sean Hayes.

Filming began in the United Kingdom on November 4, 2024, with locations including London and a week at Wembley Stadium for a big action sequence. Production wrapped on March 28, 2025. Paul Machliss, who has worked with Wright on five films, handled editing, while Industrial Light & Magic provided visual effects.

The first trailer for the film was released on July 1, 2025. It features a remix of Underdog by Sly and the Family Stone. To promote it, Glen Powell teamed up with social media influencer Ashton Hall, appearing in one of Hall’s “morning routine” videos, which ended with Hall watching the trailer in a private theater.

Movie’s release date was moved a couple of times to avoid competition with other big films, most recently settling on November 14, 2025. Fans of Wright, King, and action thrillers have plenty to look forward to as the countdown to the gameshow begins.
