It looks like a corner of South London could be getting a Marvel makeover. Greenwich’s Naval College was closed to the public this week as a film crew set up for what appeared to be a period shoot.

From midweek through Sunday, January 11, the crew was spotted filming what looked like a police chase through 1940s London. Period cars, including vintage police vehicles and a red double-decker bus, rolled through the streets while dozens of extras wore wartime-era outfits.

Staff at the Naval College, while tight-lipped, did confirm the shoot was for a “blockbuster fantasy sequel” from a franchise “everyone’s heard of.” Photographers on set were even seen wearing Avengers: Doomsday jackets, hinting that Marvel’s superhero team may have taken a detour south of the Thames.

Though principal photography for Avengers: Doomsday wrapped in September 2025, large-scale Marvel productions often require extra filming during post-production. Reshoots help with rewrites or allow stars with scheduling conflicts to complete their scenes. Given the size of Doomsday, additional photography is expected.

Why would part of the film take place in wartime London? One likely reason is Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Chris Evans is confirmed to return, and his character’s time-traveling adventures could easily bring him back to Blitz-era London to reunite with Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell. Sources say Peggy will have a major role in the sequel, and it would make sense for her scenes to be set during World War II.

The first teaser even shows Rogers cradling a baby, which fans assume is Peggy’s child. Rumors from the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps suggest Doctor Doom could be trying to kidnap superhero babies.

Greenwich’s Naval College has a long history as a filming location. Pirates of the Caribbean, Kingsman, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness all used the site, and Thor: The Dark World digitally destroyed it for the film. Ridley Scott’s Napoleon also used the location, as did productions needing Parisian battlements for French Revolution scenes.

One reason the Naval College is so popular with Hollywood is practical. As security staff explained, “Parking” makes it easy. Central London has similar-looking streets, but few spaces large enough to hold hundreds of crew members, actors, and set trucks.

While nothing officially confirms the multiverse will visit Greenwich in Avengers: Doomsday, all signs point to it. Marvel fans will likely get at least a glimpse of wartime London when the sequel hits theaters. We’ll update with more behind-the-scenes info as it becomes available.
