Fans of the Star Wars universe got a treat as Empire released a new image from the upcoming film The Mandalorian and Grogu. The movie, directed by Jon Favreau and co-written by Favreau and Dave Filoni, continues the story from the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian (2019–2023).

The film stars Pedro Pascal returning as Din Djarin, also known as the Mandalorian, alongside Grogu, his small but powerful companion.

Sigourney Weaver joins the cast as Ward, a colonel and leader in the New Republic, while Jeremy Allen White plays Rotta, the son of the late Jabba the Hutt. Jonny Coyne appears as an Imperial warlord, leading one of the remaining factions of the fallen Galactic Empire.

Favreau and Filoni had originally written a fourth season of The Mandalorian by February 2023. However, production was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes. During this pause, Lucasfilm decided to focus on a feature film instead of the fourth season, prioritizing the Mandalorian story in theaters.

The film was officially announced in January 2024, with filming beginning in California by August and wrapping in December of the same year.

The story takes place after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Din Djarin and Grogu are enlisted by the New Republic as Imperial warlords continue to threaten the galaxy. Dave Filoni also reprises his role as New Republic X-wing pilot Trapper Wolf, and the film will feature appearances from characters like Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels and the Anzellan species from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 22, 2026.
