The deadly android doll M3GAN is back in action, but this time she’s fighting something even more dangerous than before. M3GAN 2.0, the sequel to the hit 2022 sci-fi horror movie M3GAN, is heading to theaters on June 27, 2025. Universal Pictures confirmed the release date after the original film became a surprise box office success.

This time around, M3GAN isn’t the villain. Instead, she’s being rebuilt to take down another AI, an advanced military robot named AMELIA that was created using her stolen technology.

Things go sideways when AMELIA becomes self-aware, turns on the people who made her, and begins an AI takeover. To stop her, Gemma, M3GAN’s creator, and her niece Cady decide to bring M3GAN back online, with new upgrades to help her fight.

The story picks up two years after the events of the first movie. Gemma, played by Allison Williams, has become a well-known voice speaking out about AI safety. But even while warning others, she’s secretly kept M3GAN running, locked away in the form of a harmless doll. Once AMELIA shows signs of going rogue, there’s no other choice but to unleash M3GAN again.

Violet McGraw returns as Cady, Gemma’s niece, who has formed a close bond with M3GAN. Amie Donald plays M3GAN physically, with Jenna Davis voicing the character again. Ivanna Sakhno joins the cast as AMELIA, while other new cast members include Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp, and Jemaine Clement. Returning characters Cole and Tess, played by Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps, are also part of the sequel.

The film is directed once again by Gerard Johnstone, who also co-wrote the story with Akela Cooper. Cooper wrote the first movie’s script and returned to write the sequel. Producers Jason Blum and James Wan are back as well, under their companies Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster.

Filming took place in Auckland, New Zealand, starting in mid-July 2024 and wrapping up by the end of September that same year. It lasted 52 days from start to finish. The movie’s music is being done by Chris Bacon, who also composed the score.

A new clip shared by Fandango gives a first look at M3GAN going up against AMELIA. The scene shows the two androids squaring off in a high-stakes moment that teases just how intense the battle will be.

Originally, M3GAN 2.0 was supposed to come out earlier in 2025, with dates set in January and then May. But now, Universal has locked in June 27 as the final release date.

Turning M3GAN from villain to anti-hero is a bold move, but it makes the story more exciting. Watching her go up against a weaponized robot built with her own tech sounds like it could take the franchise in a fun and action-packed direction. If the sequel keeps the creepy charm and smart commentary on AI from the first film, fans are in for a good time.
