A new Maze Runner movie is on the way, and fans of the sci-fi series have a lot to be excited about. After years of silence following the original trilogy, reports suggest that the franchise is officially making a comeback.

Back in 2019, not long after Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the studio confirmed during their CinemaCon presentation that new Maze Runner projects were being developed.

Things were quiet for a while, but the idea clearly never died. Then, in May 2024, news broke that a reboot was officially in the works. Wes Ball, who directed the original films, is returning to produce, and Jack Paglen has been hired to write the script.

According to early reports, the new movie won’t be a straight remake or a direct sequel. Instead, it’s said to be “a sort of continuation… yet also return to the elements that made the first movie connect with its audience.”

This means the story will take place in the same universe as the original trilogy but will focus on new characters and fresh stories.

Industry insider Daniel Richtman now adds that a new Maze Runner film is now “reportedly in development with an original story in the same universe and new leads.”

The first Maze Runner film, released in 2014, was directed by Wes Ball in his debut and based on James Dashner’s best-selling novel. It followed Thomas, played by Dylan O’Brien, who wakes up in a strange maze with no memory of who he is.

Along with other boys trapped there, he tries to find a way out of the constantly changing labyrinth. The film starred O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter, and Patricia Clarkson.

The movie was a hit among audiences and did well with critics too. On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 66% with the consensus reading: “With strong acting, a solid premise, and a refreshingly dark approach to its dystopian setting, The Maze Runner stands out from the crowded field of YA sci-fi adventures.”

On Metacritic, it earned a score of 57 out of 100, and CinemaScore audiences gave it an A−.
