New Reports Reveal Co-Lead in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Chris Hemsworth’s role in Avengers: Doomsday could be bigger than fans expected. According to Matt Belloni from The Town podcast, Hemsworth might actually be the second lead in the movie.
During a recent episode, Belloni talked to Wall Street Journal reporter Ben Fritz, and while discussing the MCU, he mentioned, “He’s got a major role.” He was talking about Hemsworth’s Thor.
Nothing’s confirmed yet, but this lines up with other things we’ve been hearing. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently made comments that seem to support the idea.
At a press event for Fantastic Four: First Steps, Feige talked about the future of long-running characters like Thor. He said, “Where we have great actors playing great characters, I think it would be fun to see them in multiple places.”
Feige also brought up how some iconic roles will eventually be recast. He mentioned that Iron Man and Captain America might see new faces at some point, but Hemsworth’s Thor still has time left. “X-Men is where that will happen,” Feige said, referring to where recasting will start.
On top of all this, Hemsworth posted a message online that got fans even more curious. It came with a Marvel video originally released in 2022 celebrating his journey as Thor.
He added his own words this time, writing, “Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the last 15 years I’ve held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me. Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable… Next up, Doomsday!”
A lot of fans think he might be hinting at saying goodbye. Others think he’s just excited to have a big part in this next film. Either way, his role in Doomsday seems pretty important.
The movie itself is going to be massive. Avengers: Doomsday is the 39th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fifth Avengers film after Endgame. It’s directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. The cast is full of big names from all over the MCU, including Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, Paul Rudd, Pedro Pascal, and even Robert Downey Jr.—but this time he’s playing Doctor Doom.
Filming started in April 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England. Some scenes are also being shot in Bahrain. The movie is set to come out on December 18, 2026, with a follow-up, Secret Wars, scheduled for December 17, 2027.
The story takes place more than a year after Thunderbolts and brings together the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and the original X-Men to fight Doctor Doom, played by Downey.
There was originally a different plan for this phase of the MCU. Back in 2022, Marvel announced two new Avengers films, The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, as part of the big Multiverse Saga. Destin Daniel Cretton was supposed to direct Kang Dynasty, with Jonathan Majors returning as Kang.
But things changed. After Majors faced legal issues, Marvel dropped him in late 2023. Cretton also left, and Waldron replaced Jeff Loveness as the writer. By July 2024, Marvel announced that the Russo brothers would return as directors, McFeely came back as writer, and Downey was cast as the new villain. That’s when they also revealed the new title: Avengers: Doomsday.
So far, Marvel hasn’t said anything official about Hemsworth being the co-lead. But between Belloni’s podcast, Feige’s comments, and Hemsworth’s own post, it’s clear he’s not just showing up for a quick cameo. Whether this is Thor’s final battle or just another huge moment, it sounds like he’s going to be right at the center of the action.
