New ‘Scarlet’ Trailer Reveals Hosoda’s Emotional Anime Adventure – Release Date Revealed
Mamoru Hosoda, one of Japan’s most celebrated anime directors, is returning to the big screen with his first film in four years, titled Scarlet. The new movie is a fresh, time-bending take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet and promises an emotional and thrilling story.
According to Sony Pictures Classics, Scarlet follows a sword-wielding princess living in medieval times who sets out to avenge her father’s death.
Her mission puts her in grave danger, and after failing and becoming seriously injured, she finds herself in a strange world between life and death. There, she meets a young man from the present day who helps her heal and shows her the possibility of a life beyond anger and revenge. “When confronted again by her father’s killer, Scarlet faces her most daunting battle: can she break the cycle of hatred and find meaning in life beyond revenge?” the synopsis reads.

The voice cast for Scarlet includes Mana Ashida, Masaki Okada, and Kôji Yakusho. The film is produced by Yuichiro Saito, Toshimi Tanio, and Nozomu Takahashi.
Scarlet is set to hit select IMAX theaters on February 6, 2026, before opening nationwide on February 13. A trailer for the film has also been released, giving fans a first look at the stunning animation and action-packed story.
Hosoda is known for his imaginative storytelling and previous hits like Mirai and Belle. His new film continues his tradition of combining heartfelt emotion with thrilling visuals, exploring themes of revenge, forgiveness, and personal growth.
