There’s a lot happening in the world of Star Wars movies right now. Some projects are moving forward fast, while others are slowing down or even getting paused. One thing that’s locked in is The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is being directed by Jon Favreau. That movie has an official release date and is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026.

But that’s just one part of the bigger picture. Lucasfilm has a bunch of other films in development too. Directors like Shawn Levy, Dave Filoni, James Mangold, and Taika Waititi are all working on their own Star Wars projects. Most of these are still in the early stages, but fans are paying close attention, hoping for more updates soon.

Now, according to industry insider Daniel Richtman, another project might be added to the growing list.

He recently shared on his Patreon that Lucasfilm is developing a spinoff film connected to the sequel trilogy. That’s the trilogy that includes The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker.

Right now, it’s unclear which character this new movie would focus on. Richtman didn’t say, and Lucasfilm hasn’t revealed anything official either. It could be Rey, Poe, Kylo Ren (maybe through flashbacks), or even a side character. Some fans are hoping for a Finn story, but that’s considered unlikely based on some of his past statements. The whole thing is still very early in development, so there’s not much solid info yet.

The sequel trilogy isn’t exactly loved by everyone, but there is already a movie centered on Rey that’s been announced. That film is meant to continue her story after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. But the status of that project is all over the place. For a while it seemed to be moving forward, but now it’s been put on hold again. It hasn’t been canceled, just delayed.

The reason for the delay seems to be changes behind the scenes. The writer, Steven Knight, recently left the project, which slowed things down. Lucasfilm is now focusing more on other films like the ones from Shawn Levy and James Mangold, which appear to be moving ahead first.

There’s also a lot of talk about Rey’s future in the franchise overall. Some sources suggest she’ll still play a big role, especially in the years ahead. But it’s not clear what that really means. Simon Kinberg is working on a new trilogy, and no one knows if Rey will be part of that or not. “While the character is being teased as having a major future in the franchise, the surrounding rumors aren’t exactly encouraging,” one source said.

So for now, there are more questions than answers. Lucasfilm clearly has big plans, but between shifting priorities, creative changes, and a packed release schedule, it’s hard to say which projects will happen first, or at all.
