The Tokyo special was first announced at CCXP 2020 on December 5. In 2022, Little, Brown and Company added a book adaptation of the “Origins” two-parter to the Edelweiss catalog, hinting that three TV specials were in production that year, which would later include Miraculous Paris and Miraculous London.

Variety reported on January 11, 2024, that two specials were in production. Thomas Astruc confirmed on Twitter on May 1 that the Tokyo special had not yet been officially greenlit. By June, according to Jun Violet’s LinkedIn profile, the special had entered production. On July 5, Sébastien Thibaudeau revealed that he and Thomas Astruc were working on the script, mentioning the special’s codename starts with “J.” Later in October, Jean-Louis Vandestoc, creator of LoliRock, referred to the project as an OVA, and Jeremy Zag confirmed the theme song will be in Japanese and that LadyTiger will not appear.
During MIPJunior on October 19, Andy Yeatman stated that the special is expected to be delivered by the end of this year, and a spinoff series titled Miraculous Stellar Force is planned for 2027.
On June 7, Variety provided more details about the spinoff, the full title of the special, and confirmed the 2025 release date. At the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on June 10, two short scenes from the special were shown, and further storyboarded and completed scenes were revealed on July 2 at the TFOU Back-to-school conference. A full storyboarded scene was also shared at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24.
Fans now have a first look at the action with the newly released teaser and posters. The visuals highlight the Stellar Force team’s mecha designs, giving a glimpse of the high-tech heroics fans can expect in the Tokyo special.
