New Teaser Drops as ‘John Wick’ Spin-Off Movie Hits Key Production Update
A new John Wick spin-off film titled Caine has officially begun production, according to studio updates from Lionsgate and production partners. The movie expands the action universe built around the popular franchise and focuses on the character Caine, played again by Donnie Yen.
This new entry is also known as From the World of John Wick: Caine. Donnie Yen not only returns as the lead actor but also directs the film. The story is based on an idea he developed with Chad Stahelski, with the script written by Robert Askins and Mattson Tomlin.
The film continues the story after John Wick: Chapter 4. It follows Caine after he breaks away from the High Table, the powerful assassin group that controls much of the world in the franchise’s story.

Rina Sawayama is also returning to her role as Akira. She appears in a supporting part as the story continues to connect to events set up in the previous film.
Production companies involved include Lionsgate Films, Thunder Road Films, and 87Eleven Productions. Lionsgate is handling distribution for the project.
Reports also confirm that Markus Förderer is working as the cinematographer.
The idea for a Caine-focused film has been in development for several years. Early talks began after the release of John Wick: Chapter 4. The post-credit scene in that film, which hinted at future conflict involving Caine and Akira, helped shape interest in continuing the story.
Producer Erica Lee previously mentioned that the studio was working on new projects to expand the franchise. Around the same time, Donnie Yen also showed interest in continuing his role. Later updates confirmed that multiple spin-offs were being developed as part of the wider John Wick universe.
In 2024, the project was officially confirmed, with Donnie Yen attached to star and direct. By 2025, Lionsgate gave the film the official green light at CinemaCon. At that stage, more details were shared about the creative team and direction of the movie.
The film is described as a martial arts-style action project influenced by classic Hong Kong cinema. It also continues the timeline directly after the events of the fourth John Wick movie.
Later production updates confirmed that filming would take place across different locations in Europe and Hong Kong, with a planned schedule running through mid-2026.
This spin-off is a strong choice for the franchise. Donnie Yen was one of the most memorable parts of the last John Wick film, and giving him full control as both actor and director makes this project more interesting.
