‘The Monkey’ is a comedy horror film based on Stephen King’s 1980 short story. Directed by Osgood Perkins, it stars Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, and others. The movie will be officialy be released on February 21, 2025.

The story follows twin brothers, Hal and Bill, who find their father’s old toy monkey in the attic. Soon after, they witness a series of deadly events. Trying to escape the curse, they get rid of the monkey and go separate ways. However, the deaths start again, and the brothers must reunite to destroy the cursed toy for good.

Today, the movie has released its first trailer, and you can see that a lot of thoughts has been put into planning inventive ways to die.

Judging by the footage, despite having some comedic moments, it’s going to be a dark and twisted tale that’s not for the lighthearted.

The movie has been previously described as dark, R-Rated family movie, which seems quite silly but it just might be a correct genre to describe it. Theo James explained in previous interviews that Clear and producer Peter Safran had the rights to ‘The Monkey’ and a script that wasn’t working.

Director Osgood Perkins pitched a fresh approach to the story, making it come together in a way that impressed everyone, even the team behind ‘The Conjuring’ films. Director, Perkins also explained his unique approach. He suggested, “What if it’s a comedy?” He described the monkey as an evil presence, not because it attacks like M3GAN, but simply because it exists. Strange and deadly events happen around it for no clear reason, with its presence causing people to die in bizarre ways.

Everybody dies whether there’s a monkey or not. What if you could do this with a smile — process the fact that everybody dies? And what an insane, surrealist notion, dude! You will die; we’ll all die. That’s crazy sh–. To do that as a comedy felt very apropos.”

James further added that fans of Stephen King adaptations can expect one “hyper-dark” and really funny movie.

He wanted to make a family movie, but an R-rated oneIt’s hyper dark, but also it has heart to it, and it’s really funny.
