New Trailer for Hulu’s ‘Washington Black’ Explores Nova Scotia and Sterling K. Brown’s Haunting Past
The new Hulu series Washington Black is set to arrive on July 23, 2025. This show is based on the book by Esi Edugyan and tells a powerful story set in the early 1800s.
The story takes place in Barbados and Nova Scotia and follows a young boy named George Washington ‘Wash’ Black, played by Ernest Kingsley Jr. When a sudden death happens on his family’s sugar plantation in Barbados, Wash is forced to run away. He ends up under the care of Medwin Harris, a character played by Sterling K. Brown, who has his own difficult past as a Black refugee in Nova Scotia.
Hulu has recently released the trailer ahead of the show’s release:
The cast also includes Eddie Katanga as the younger version of Washington Black, Tom Ellis as Christopher ‘Titch’ Wilde, and Iola Evans as Tanna Goff. Other actors like Julian Rhind-Tutt, Billy Boyd, and Charles Dance join the series in important roles.
According to sources, 20th Television teamed up with several production companies, including Indian Meadows Productions and Anthony Hemingway Productions, to bring this story to the screen. The project was officially picked up by Hulu in October 2021 as a limited series, planned to have eight episodes.
Sterling K. Brown is not only starring but also producing the show. Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and Brown serve as executive producers. The series is adapted for television by Hinds, who also acts as showrunner alongside writer Jennifer Johnson. Directors Wanuri Kahiu and Mo Marable are in charge of bringing the episodes to life.
The journey to make this series began in March 2019 when the rights to the book were bought after a competitive bidding process. By September 2019, it was reported that Hulu was developing the adaptation with Sterling K. Brown involved early on as a producer. Casting announcements followed in late 2021 and early 2022, with Ernest Kingsley Jr. confirmed as the lead. The cast grew to include other well-known names like Tom Ellis and Charles Dance.
Filming started in March 2022 in Nova Scotia, with many scenes shot in places such as Lunenburg, The Ovens, and Halifax. The production later moved to Mexico City to finish filming, wrapping up in September 2024.
All eight episodes of Washington Black will be available on Hulu when it premieres in the U.S., and internationally it will be shown on Disney+.
