Venom is heading back to the big screen, but this time in animated form. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is developing a new animated Venom movie with filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein attached to direct.

The project is still in early development. Many details have not been confirmed yet. A studio source says that Tom Hardy, who played Eddie Brock in the three live-action Venom films, will be involved in some way. It is not clear if he will return as the voice of the character or take on a different role behind the scenes.

The live-action Venom films were not well-received by critics, but they performed strongly at the box office. Together, the three movies earned more than $1.8 billion worldwide. Sony controls the rights to Venom through its deal tied to the Spider-Man universe and will produce the new film under Sony Pictures Animation.

Sony’s animation division has already found success with Spider-Man films such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. A third installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is expected to arrive in theaters in 2027.

Given that Lipovsky and Stein recently directed Final Destination Bloodlines, which earned $317.9 million and revived that horror franchise, this animated Venom may lean into darker themes rather than a family-friendly tone. The directing duo are also set to co-write Gremlins 3 with Chris Columbus directing and producing. Steven Spielberg is attached as an executive producer. That film is also planned for a 2027 release.

For now, the animated Venom movie remains in development, and more information is expected as the project moves forward. Fans of the character will be watching closely to see how Sony reimagines the popular anti-hero in animation.
