Nicki Minaj is drawing a definitive line in the sand when it comes to transgender rights, signaling a major shift in her public platform.

In a revealing interview on The Katie Miller Podcast, the rap superstar clarified that while she fully supports the autonomy of transgender adults, she is firmly opposed to gender-affirming medical procedures for minors. The conversation, which aired this Monday, showcased a Nicki Minaj who is becoming as known for her political provocations as she is for her chart-topping hits.

I personally don’t have an issue with the trans part of the LGBT at all, Minaj stated during the sit-down. I am the biggest advocate for adults being able to do whatever the heck they want to do. They’re adults. I don’t care. However, the rapper’s tone shifted significantly when the host brought up the topic of children and medical transitions.

Drawing a comparison to other cosmetic surgeries, Minaj explained that her protective instincts as a parent guide her viewpoint. I wouldn’t even allow my 17-year-old daughter to get breast implants, she said, using the hypothetical to illustrate her stance on age and consent. Most 99% of the parents would not let their 17-year-old child get breast implants. So if you wouldn’t let a child get breast implants, you’re not going to want them to have any kind of surgery because we all know the brain is not developed.

The Queens native further supported her position by citing controversial data regarding mental health outcomes. We’ve heard about 19 times more likely to commit suicide, Minaj claimed during the interview. What more do you need to know that a child is 19 times more likely to commit suicide if they have a surgery before they’re an adult?

The discussion eventually pivoted toward California politics, where Minaj took the opportunity to launch a scathing attack on Governor Gavin Newsom. After Miller listed several grievances regarding the state’s current climate, including immigration policies and the inclusion of transgender ideology in schools, Minaj took aim at Newsom’s perceived vanity and presidential ambitions.

With everything you said, but then having the audacity to be playing on Twitter, obsessed with Trump, trying to be Trump, trying to be funny when it’s not, she said. We would never want someone like that to be our president. Minaj went on to predict a grim political future for the Governor, calling him disloyal and asserting that no one is going to vote for you.

This interview is just the latest move in Minaj’s high-profile pivot toward conservative circles. Just last week, the rapper made headlines by attending the world premiere of the documentary Melania at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Dressed in high-fashion Schiaparelli, she mingled with President Donald Trump and Donald Trump Jr., later declaring herself the President’s number one fan.

Do you agree with Nicki Minaj’s distinction between adult and minor transitions, or do you think her recent political shift will alienate her core fan base? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
