Nicki Minaj has fired back at fans who criticized her for supporting President Donald Trump’s efforts to protect Christians in Nigeria.

On Saturday, Minaj shared a screenshot of a Truth Social post from Trump on X, in which he described Christians in Nigeria as “facing an existential threat” and said he is designating the country as a “country of particular concern.” Minaj praised Trump, saying she felt “a deep sense of gratitude” for living in a country where people can freely worship God.

Trump’s post suggested that if the persecution of Christians in Nigeria continues, the United States could take swift military action. However, a spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Al Jazeera on Sunday that Christians are not being specifically targeted.

“We are not proud of the security situation that we are passing through, but to go with the narrative (that Christians are the only ones being targeted) is not true. There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria,” the spokesperson said.

“We’ve continuously made our point clear that we acknowledge the fact that there are killings that have taken place in Nigeria, but those killings were not restricted to Christians alone. Muslims are being killed. Traditional worshippers are being killed… The majority is not the Christian population.”

Some of Minaj’s fans reacted negatively to her post supporting Trump. One fan quote-tweeted her post, saying they might stop being a fan. “Nicki, as a die hard fan, who genuinely sticks besides you through every single scandal, you cozying up to this f**** loser, I might actually have to tap out… We live in a country that wants to weaponize religion so YOUR GAY FANS can be pushed into a corner and silenced,” the fan wrote.

Minaj responded strongly, defending her stance. “Imagine hearing that Christians are being MURDERED & making it about you being gay […] I’ll advocate for you the same way that I’m advocating for MURDERED CHRISTIANS IN NIGERIA. Like I always have. Just remember that. Diligently. Compassionately. Just remember that part, too!!!!” She also questioned whether the fan was really a “die hard fan” and threatened to block them.

Her post drew attention from Mike Waltz, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, who invited Minaj to the UN to discuss “in more depth what our administration is doing to protect Christians’ freedoms all over the world.”

Minaj shared the invitation with her fans on X, quoting a fan post and writing, “COME ON BARBZ, LET’S MAKE AMERICA GAG AGAIN,” calling herself the “first female rapper in history to receive an invitation to the United Nations.”

The incident highlights Minaj’s willingness to publicly defend her political and humanitarian views, even when facing criticism from fans, and good for her.
