John Sr. fails a test set by the Guardians, and a lone Guardian later reveals herself to Bernadette and strikes a bargain that the couple will raise their youngest son to be fearless. From that point they put John through rigorous training in the hope that the Guardians are watching.
Salon noted that Bernadette challenges the Guardian over how unfair it is to ask a Black man in America whether he is afraid. The outlet also found the tender moments to be the strongest observations in the hour, including Bernadette telling John that bravery means trying despite worry.
Episode writer Vanessa Baden Kelly said Bernadette would have been chosen had the ring not been sexist, given her fearlessness, while Jones described the character as a superhero without the cape. In an interview with Collider, J. Alphonse Nicholson reflected that as a father he understands why a parent might carry some regret about how a child was raised.
Where the ‘Lanterns’ Series Stands Now
The series premiered on Sunday, August 16, and releases weekly, with the finale scheduled for October 4. Episodes arrive on Sundays through HBO and HBO Max.
The sixth episode, titled “Bad Optics,” returns to the present day storyline introduced in the premiere. Parker’s Bernadette belongs to that present day timeline, though the coverage so far does not say when she steps forward.
The show’s audience score has reportedly climbed since its premiere, and it has drawn early comparisons to ‘True Detective.’ HBO has not yet confirmed a second season.
