Nicole Kidman Steals the Spotlight at the Star-Studded ‘Practical Magic 2’ Premiere
Nearly three decades have passed since audiences first fell for the Owens sisters, and the wait for their reunion has felt like an eternity for fans of the cult classic. What started as a passing joke about a follow-up has slowly, quietly become one of the year’s most anticipated sequels.
That long journey finally reached a major milestone this week, as the film’s stars stepped back into character in the most public way possible.
Nicole Kidman stunned at the ‘Practical Magic 2’ premiere in London, reuniting with Sandra Bullock for their first official red carpet appearance together as the film’s press tour officially kicked off. Kidman wore a custom Chanel gown covered in sequins, featuring draped gold chain details across the bust and shoulders alongside a thigh-high slit, while Bullock opted for a strapless leopard-print Givenchy gown with a corseted bodice and dramatic bow detail.
The pair are reprising their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens, the witch sisters at the center of the original 1998 film based on Alice Hoffman’s novel. In the story, the Owens women descend from a survivor of the Salem Witch Trials and must contend with a generational curse that kills the men they fall in love with, all while learning to embrace the parts of themselves that make them different.
Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are also returning as the sisters’ eccentric aunts, with Joey King and Maisie Williams joining the cast as Sally’s two daughters, both of whom appear to have inherited some magical gifts of their own. Kidman paired her sequined gown with minimal jewelry and sleek, straight hair, while Bullock finished her look with gold chain necklaces and feathered black open-toed heels.
The sequel also marks a significant return for Bullock, who hasn’t appeared in a film since 2022’s ‘The Lost City.’ In the years since, she stepped away from acting to care for her family, particularly during the period when her longtime partner Bryan Randall was battling ALS before his death in 2023.
Kidman has spoken about the long road to getting the sequel made, having confirmed years ago that both she and Bullock were eager to bring the Owens sisters back to the screen. Talking with Variety at the time, Kidman said the project had been something they had “been circling” for a while, even as it remained in its earliest stages of development.
Susanne Bier is directing the follow-up from a script by Akiva Goldsman, who also co-wrote the original film, giving the sequel a direct creative thread back to the story fans fell in love with in 1998. Beyond Kidman and Bullock, the cast also includes Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod in previously undisclosed roles.
‘Practical Magic 2’ is set to hit theaters on September 11, arriving twenty-eight years after the original first cast its spell on audiences. Given the strength of this first red carpet showing, and the clear enthusiasm both stars have carried into the project, fans finally have real reason to believe this long-awaited reunion was worth the wait.
