Nintendo Wants Discord to Reveal Who Leaked Pokémon ‘Teraleak’ Info
Nintendo is taking legal action to find out who is behind the major Pokémon leak known as the “Teraleak.” The gaming company has asked a court in California to force Discord to reveal the identity of the person who leaked information about Pokémon games in October 2024.
The leak included big details about past, current, and even future Pokémon games. It was shared online by a Discord user going by the name “GameFreakOUT.” This user didn’t just post game information, they also claimed to have access to the secret source code for several Pokémon games.
That’s a big deal in the gaming world because source code can be used to copy, change, or understand how the games were made.
According to documents shared by Polygon, Nintendo wants the court to approve a subpoena. A subpoena is a legal request that can force someone or a company to share private information. In this case, Nintendo wants Discord to hand over the leaker’s real name, address, phone number, and email.
Nintendo’s lawyer, James D. Berkley, said in the filing that the subpoena would help the company “obtain the identity of the Discord user ‘GameFreakOUT,’ who posted infringing content.” Along with the court filing, Nintendo included a screenshot from the Discord server where the leak happened. In the image, the user is seen sharing a file and writing “enjoy,” suggesting they knew they were giving away something big.
One important detail that is still unclear is how involved “GameFreakOUT” was in getting the leaked files. Around the same time the leak happened, the Pokémon developer Game Freak said that someone had broken into their servers without permission. The company said they have since worked to improve their security.
This is not the first time Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have gone after people who leak game content. Back in 2021, two people who leaked images from Pokémon Sword and Shield were fined $300,000 after a legal case.
Nintendo is known for taking leaks very seriously. The company works hard to keep its projects secret until they are ready to be announced. Now, they’re hoping the court will help them track down the person responsible for this major Pokémon leak.
