Noah Schnapp has sparked a wave of excitement and debate among Stranger Things fans after being asked about the popular ‘Byler’ ship, which pairs his character Will Byers with his best friend Mike Wheeler, played by Finn Wolfhard.

The interview took place during Schnapp’s appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on December 16, according to sources.

When Cohen asked how Schnapp felt about fans hoping Will and Mike would end up together, the 21-year-old actor seemed flustered. “Oh man, are we live? Um,” he said, visibly nervous.

He continued cautiously, “I think… I mean look, it’s like a real kind of authentic representation of a queer kid in the ‘80s. I’ve dealt with that myself, being in love with a friend and maybe they don’t love you back or they feel differently.”

Schnapp refused to reveal the ending, but hinted that the showrunners handled the story carefully. “I’m not gonna spoil anything but [showrunners] The Duffers close it really well,” he added. He later confirmed that he is happy with how the season ends, even though the cast hasn’t yet seen the final episodes.

The question of whether Will and Mike will become more than friends has divided the Stranger Things fandom for years. Some fans believe in a romantic ending for the pair, while others see Will’s feelings as unrequited. Season five so far has not clarified this, leaving fans speculating about the future of ‘Byler.’

Wolfhard has previously said that a romantic ending wouldn’t necessarily feel earned, adding more uncertainty for fans. Schnapp’s vague remarks have caused further debate online. Some viewers see his comment about unrequited love as confirmation that Will’s feelings may not be returned. Others interpret his words as teasing the possibility of a romantic resolution.

Fans reacted quickly to Schnapp’s interview on social media. On YouTube, one viewer wrote, “OH BYLER IS SO ENDGAME Y’ALL.” Another tweeted, “First of all there’s nothing worrisome about it. He has to be tight lipped… yet he said ‘maybe’ he doesn’t love you back.” Many others praised Schnapp for giving ambiguous answers without spoiling the plot.

The next three episodes of Stranger Things season five are scheduled to stream on Netflix on December 25 in the US and December 26 in the UK. The season finale will air on December 31 in the US and January 1 in the UK.

It seems clear that Noah Schnapp is keeping fans on their toes while respecting the show’s secrets. His careful answers have only fueled excitement and speculation about what will happen with Will and Mike.
