Noah Wyle Wins His Second Straight Emmy for ‘The Pitt,’ Joining an Elite Group of Back-To-Back Winners

Winning an Emmy once is already a career highlight for most performers, but repeating that win the following year for the same role puts an actor in genuinely rare company. This year’s ceremony added Noah Wyle to that short list, capping off another dominant showing for HBO Max’s breakout medical drama.

‘The Pitt’ has spent the past two seasons building a reputation as one of television’s most acclaimed dramas, blending the frantic pace of a real-time emergency room with a level of critical praise that’s followed the show since its debut. The series already made history during its first season, winning Outstanding Drama Series as a rookie upstart before returning this year as a revered favorite.

That momentum carried straight through to the acting categories. Noah Wyle won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, marking his second consecutive win in the category and beating out a competitive field that included Mark Ruffalo for ‘Task,’ Gary Oldman for ‘Slow Horses,’ Sterling K. Brown for ‘Paradise,’ and Rufus Sewell for ‘The Diplomat.’

Wyle opened his acceptance speech by acknowledging just how overwhelming the moment felt, before turning his attention to his fellow nominees. He specifically singled out Gary Oldman, telling the crowd, “I don’t know if there’s an actor my age that didn’t look and think, ‘That’s the benchmark that I want to hit one day in my career,'” according to Variety.

He went on to thank his collaborators at HBO and Warner Television before reflecting on his own roots in the industry. “I grew up in L.A. I’m a Hollywood kid. I was raised on television, and movie theaters were my place of worship,” Wyle said. “This is all I’ve ever wanted to do, and this is the only club I’ve ever wanted to join.”

Wyle also gave a shoutout to the crew members who work behind the scenes on the show’s set, noting that everyone would be back at it early the next morning tackling the demanding production schedule that defines ‘The Pitt’s’ real-time storytelling format.

With this win, Wyle became just the fifth actor in Emmy history to win Lead Actor in a Drama Series for both of a show’s first two seasons, joining E.G. Marshall for ‘The Defenders,’ Bill Cosby for ‘I Spy,’ Daniel J. Travanti for ‘Hill Street Blues,’ and Bryan Cranston for ‘Breaking Bad.’ He’s also the first actor to accomplish that feat since Cranston did it back in 2009.

The win adds to an already strong track record for Wyle and ‘The Pitt,’ which picked up five total Emmys last year, including his acting win and a producing credit for the show’s Outstanding Drama Series victory. This year, the series entered the ceremony with 25 total nominations and had already collected four additional Creative Emmys the weekend before.

Notably, Wyle was also nominated for directing ‘The Pitt’ this year, giving him a real shot at doubling up on wins during the same ceremony. With the show’s third season already in production and slated for a January 2027 release, ‘The Pitt’ shows no signs of slowing down as one of the defining dramas of this current television era.
