‘Nobody Wants This’ Season 3 Ending Explained: What the Finale Means for Joanne and Noah

Share:

The ‘Nobody Wants This’ ending leaves Joanne and Noah standing on a Malibu beach as an engaged couple and sends them off as something more. The finale follows Joanne’s mikvah, after which Noah asks Rabbi Eden, played by Sarah Silverman, to marry them on the beach while their families squabble back at the house.

That sudden leap from engagement to wedding sits on top of a messier set of consequences for Sasha, Morgan and Esther. Here is what the final episode establishes, what the creators have confirmed, and which questions the ‘Nobody Wants This’ ending leaves open.

Are Joanne and Noah Married After the Finale

The short answer is yes in spirit and not yet in the eyes of everyone else. Netflix Tudum reports that creator Erin Foster confirmed the couple are married, while co-showrunner Jenni Konner described them as married in the eyes of God but not in the eyes of anyone else yet.

The beach trip was originally meant to be the final step in Joanne’s conversion to Judaism. Instead it becomes a wedding, and the pair have what they need close at hand, including celebration wine, a witness walking his dog and a ketubah in the trunk of Rabbi Eden’s car.

Eden begins the ceremony in the final seconds of the episode as Joanne and Noah hold each other. The scene is built to feel complete and unfinished at the same time, which suits a series that has spent its run weighing faith, family and commitment against each other.

Sasha and Morgan After the New York Trip

The romantic fallout begins in Episode 7. Sasha and Morgan give in to their chemistry during a trip to New York City. Morgan then leaves Sasha behind, and he pushes her away once they return to Los Angeles.

Sasha explains in Episode 8 that he does not feel emotionally safe pursuing a relationship with her after the end of his marriage. Morgan, for her part, is honest and vulnerable with him at Joanne’s urging, and Sasha rejects her.

The finale keeps the two tied together anyway. When Morgan hurts her ankle, Sasha is the one who carries her around, although he also drops her when Esther discovers the New York hookup.

Morgan and Sasha do not agree to a relationship before the finale ends. The last time viewers see Morgan, she is icing her ankle on the deck and watching Sasha and Esther argue.

Esther and the Fallout at the Malibu House

Esther’s path through the season is one of the quieter successes of the writing. She pursues her real estate career, tries dating apps and begins seeing Julian, a wealthy client played by Steven Weber, with the two defining their relationship in Episode 8.

That progress collides with her history in the finale. Esther visits Sasha’s bachelor pad, is impressed by the maturity of his space and his parenting, and the two hook up the day before Joanne’s mikvah.

The secrets then come out in rapid order. Lynn, who cannot live with secrets, tells Esther and the Roklov family about Sasha and Morgan. Esther responds in a moment of revenge, telling Morgan in front of the parents that she slept with Sasha the day before.

The parents join the argument too. Bina tells Lynn she has no more sons for Lynn’s daughters to corrupt, while Lynn and Henry team up against her. It is also unclear whether Julian knows Esther slept with the man who is technically still her husband.

What Happens Next for the Newlyweds

The pace of the finale has drawn some pushback. One review argues that the big milestones come thick and fast, with an engagement, a completed conversion and a surprise wedding all arriving in quick succession.

The writers appear to have seen it differently. Co-showrunner Bruce Eric Kaplan has said the team felt the couple deserved room to settle in and enjoy themselves after the turbulence of the previous year. Read that way, the wedding works as a payoff rather than a rush.

Rather than asking whether Joanne and Noah belong together, the finale shifts the question to what they build next. Joanne’s conversion speech makes it clear she imagines having children with Noah, though it does not say when.

The ending leaves plenty of loose ends, including the fallout from the family argument, the newlywed status of the leads and the unresolved triangle between Sasha, Morgan and Esther. With Morgan icing her ankle on that deck and Sasha still pleading his case to Esther, who do you think has earned the better ending after that Malibu weekend, and does Joanne and Noah’s beach wedding feel like the right way to close the story?
