Noomi Rapace Transforms into Mother Teresa in Powerful First Trailer for ‘Mother’
The first trailer for Mother has been released, giving audiences their first look at Noomi Rapace as Mother Teresa. The film is directed by Teona Strugar Mitevska, who is making her English-language feature debut.
The drama tells a fictional version of seven days in the life of Mother Teresa, focusing on the moment she left her convent in Kolkata, India, to start her own order, the Missionaries of Charity.
The movie is based on Mitevska’s earlier miniseries Teresa and I from 2015, which was also about the Albanian-Indian Catholic nun.
The cast is led by Rapace, who plays Anjezë Bojaxhiu, later known as Mother Teresa. Sylvia Hoeks stars as Sister Agnieszka, while Nikola Ristanovski plays Father Friedrich, a priest close to Teresa.
Rapace has said she was attracted to the project because it doesn’t portray the famous nun in a traditional way. She described the film as “punk rock”, hinting at a bold and different take on the story.
The movie had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on August 27, 2025, screening in the Orizzonti section. According to Screen Daily, the project was first presented at the Berlinale Co-Production Market back in 2022, where it drew attention as one of Mitevska’s most ambitious works.
Filming took place in both Brussels and Kolkata, with production wrapping in November 2024.
With the first trailer now out, Mother is already sparking interest not only because of its subject but also because of how it promises to reimagine the legacy of one of the most well-known religious figures of the 20th century.
