Norman Reedus Opens Up About Saying Goodbye To Daryl Dixon As ‘The Walking Dead’ Spinoff Wraps For Good

Norman Reedus has spent the better part of two decades wrapped in a leather vest with a crossbow slung over his shoulder, becoming one of the most enduring faces of the zombie genre. After 16 years of surviving The Walking Dead franchise, the actor is now joining the land of the living, a transition that longtime fans of ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ have known was coming but still weren’t quite ready for.

The AMC spinoff is the fifth offshoot of the flagship horror drama, and it has followed Daryl alongside Melissa McBride’s Carol Peletier as the pair fight their way home after washing up in France, where the zombie virus originated. The story pushed the franchise’s footprint well past its American roots, giving Reedus new terrain and new threats to navigate season after season.

On Tuesday, the Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon star bid farewell to his eponymous zombie hunter after putting so much heart into the fourth and final season of the AMC spin-off, which recently wrapped. He marked the moment with a tribute that made clear just how personal this particular ending felt, noting that everything about closing out the character hits way different this time.

In a caption posted beneath new behind the scenes photos shared on Instagram, Reedus admitted it was really hard to choose which images to leave out now that he was finally going through them after returning from a trip to Mongolia. He praised the crew as the best he had ever worked with and said the feeling of accomplishment once the season wrapped was amazing.

The emotion did not come out of nowhere. Back in October, while teasing the new season at New York Comic Con, McBride suggested the final run was shaping up to be even better than Season 3, while Reedus signaled the cast and crew were firing on all cylinders during production. That buildup made Tuesday’s wrap announcement feel less like a surprise and more like the franchise finally exhaling.

‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ was renewed for its fourth and final season last July, with this last chapter filming on location in Spain, continuing the spinoff’s habit of swapping the franchise’s usual American backdrops for sprawling European locales. It is a fitting final stretch for a series built around a long, winding journey home.

With Reedus officially done shooting, attention now shifts to how Daryl and Carol’s road trip actually ends once the season premieres. Given how emotional the wrap already sounds, how do you think ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ should send off Daryl for good?
