‘Obsession’ Just Cracked Horror’s Top 5 All-Time List, and Its Budget Makes the Feat Even Crazier

Horror has always been Hollywood’s most reliable moneymaker, capable of turning modest budgets into massive box office returns in ways few other genres can match. Even by those standards, though, one particular 2026 breakout has managed to rewrite expectations for just how far a low-budget scary movie can actually go.

That film’s journey started small, premiering on the festival circuit before rolling out into theaters with little of the fanfare typically reserved for major studio releases. What’s followed since has become one of the most talked-about box office stories of the year, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down even months into its release.

Obsession is now sitting at roughly $506 million at the worldwide box office, according to Box Office Forecast, officially pushing the film into the top five highest-grossing horror movies of all time. That list now reads: ‘It’ (2017) with $720 million, ‘The Sixth Sense’ (1999) with $673 million, ‘I Am Legend’ (2007) with $586 million, ‘World War Z’ (2013) with $540 million, and now ‘Obsession.’

What makes that placement especially remarkable is the film’s budget. ‘Obsession’ was reportedly made for somewhere between $750,000 and $1 million, a figure dwarfed by every other title on that list. ‘It’ alone cost between $35 and $40 million to produce, while ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites,’ which ‘Obsession’ recently overtook, carried a budget of roughly $55 million.

Directed by Curry Barker, ‘Obsession’ follows a hopeless romantic who breaks a mysterious “One Wish Willow” hoping to win his crush’s heart, only to find himself trapped in a nightmare once his wish comes true. The film stars Inde Navarrette in a performance widely credited as star-making, alongside Michael Johnston and Andy Richter.

‘Obsession’ opened domestically to a modest $17 million weekend in May, a number that would typically suggest a solid but unremarkable run. Instead, the film defied the usual pattern of horror movies collapsing after their opening frame, maintaining strong weekend totals for over a month and not dipping below $17 million until its sixth weekend in theaters.

Focus Features reportedly acquired the film for around $15 million after it made waves on the festival circuit, a deal that’s paid off in a massive way given the film’s eventual box office trajectory. Distributed domestically by Focus and internationally by Universal Pictures, ‘Obsession’ has continued adding to its total even after becoming available on streaming and VOD.

Barker’s success with ‘Obsession’ has already reshaped his career, with studios reportedly courting him for future projects following the film’s breakout run. He’s since signed on to direct a new ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ film for A24, along with another original horror-comedy already completed.

With the film still adding to its total and no clear ceiling in sight, ‘Obsession’ has firmly established itself as one of the defining horror success stories of the decade, and a reminder that a compelling premise and strong word-of-mouth can outperform even the biggest studio budgets.
