Blumhouse has built its entire reputation on turning shoestring budgets into massive theatrical paydays, but even by the studio’s own standards, ‘Obsession’ has become something genuinely extraordinary. What started as a modest horror release has quietly transformed into one of the most improbable box office success stories of the entire decade.

That success began with a genuinely tiny production budget of just $750,000. Director Curry Barker’s supernatural horror film first premiered at TIFF back in September 2025 before Focus Features scooped it up for a reported $15 million, setting the stage for a U.S. theatrical release the following May that would eventually blow past every reasonable expectation attached to it.

Now, that unlikely run has reached a genuinely historic milestone. ‘Obsession’ is currently sitting at approximately $514 million at the worldwide box office, officially cementing its place among the top five highest-grossing horror movies ever made.

That ranking places it just behind ‘It’ at $720 million, ‘The Sixth Sense’ at $673 million, ‘I Am Legend’ at $586 million, and ‘World War Z’ at $540 million, while pushing past ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ to become the highest-grossing release in both Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s and Focus Features’ respective histories.

What makes this climb even more remarkable is just how many records it’s quietly broken along the way. ‘Obsession’ became the first original film released in the 2020s to cross the $500 million mark worldwide, surpassing Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ as the highest-grossing original movie of the entire post-pandemic era, a genuinely rare feat given how heavily modern box office success typically depends on established franchises.

Before reaching that milestone, the film had already overtaken William Friedkin’s 1973 classic ‘The Exorcist’ and its $430.8 million unadjusted lifetime gross, a record that had stood untouched for more than five decades before ‘Obsession’ finally broke it. The film has also become the highest-grossing festival acquisition of all time, dethroning ‘The Blair Witch Project’s’ long-standing hold on that particular title.

Its success has also helped push Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s combined 2026 output past $1 billion globally, alongside hits like ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Insidious: Out of the Further.’

For a genre that’s often dismissed as a reliable but modest moneymaker, ‘Obsession’s’ climb into horror’s all-time top five feels like a genuine landmark moment, one built entirely on word-of-mouth and a microscopic budget rather than franchise recognition or star power. Given how consistently the film has continued adding tens of millions even well after its initial theatrical window, there’s a real chance it keeps climbing even higher before its run finally ends.
