The Ocean’s franchise will return! The known heist film series started off in 2001 with Ocean’s Eleven, which was based on the 1960 movie of the same name. Two sequels, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen, followed in 2004 and 2007, respectively.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the Ocean’s trilogy starred George Clooney, Matt Damon, Andy García, Brad Pitt, Bernie Mac, and Don Cheadle. The franchise spawned a spin-off movie — Ocean’s Eight — in 2018, starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter.
Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Carrie Solomon was hired to write a screenplay for a prequel of the trilogy set in Europe in the 1960s. Margot Robbie is attached to star in and produce the project, and Jay Roach, who previously worked with Robbie on Bombshell, is set to direct.
The trilogy followed a special team led by Danny Ocean, played by George Clooney, as they’re trying to pull off an impossible heist. The spin-off followed Danny’s sister, Debbie Ocean, played by Sanda Bullock, as they tried to steal a $150 million dollar necklace at the Met Gala.
With four movies released so far, the Ocean’s franchise grossed $1.4 billion worldwide. It’s not known when will the next movie be released, but Warner Bros. reportedly plans to start production in 2023.
