Odessa A’zion Claps Back at Critics Over Comment About Not Affording Expensive Wigs
Odessa A’zion has responded to online backlash after opening up about not being able to afford expensive wigs. The rising star, who appeared in Season 1 of Rachel Sennott’s TV comedy I Love LA and Josh Safdie’s film Marty Supreme, addressed the topic in a recent interview with Deadline.
On the Critics Choice Awards red carpet, A’zion joked about the chatter surrounding her hair. “There’s a whole debate, ‘Is it a wig? Is it not?’ I guess we’ll never know. No…I’m kidding,” she told Deadline, referring to her appearance at the event. The interview quickly went viral, racking up millions of views on social media.
Following the online attention, A’zion clarified her comments about wigs and money. “I didn’t know that there was such a stigma behind wigs in particular,” she said. “I talked about money, but then I don’t think that people realize that for a large majority of your career, you’re not making a lot of money. It’s not going too crazy, but knock on wood, there will be some changes. But that’s just what I meant when I said I’m trying to save my funds.”

She also explained that the hair she wore at the Marty Supreme premiere in Los Angeles was a wig, while her hair at the New York premiere was natural. “The New York [premiere] was my hair that I took literally five hours to do,” she said. “Everyone thought it was a wig. And I’m like, ‘Guys, can I get a little credit here? I didn’t just put this on. This took me a hot minute.’”
A’zion reflected on her acting career as well, noting that even after her recent successes, offers for major roles have been limited. “You know what? I have not been getting a ton of offers. I think a big part of it too is honestly, there’s not a whole lot of leading or supporting juicy roles for women still — to be real.”
The actor said she hopes to continue playing challenging and dramatic roles like Rachel Mizler in Marty Supreme. “I really, really like playing roles like Rachel. She was such a dream role. She was smart and calculated, and then she got to erupt… I like screaming, I like crying, I like going through real f**** up s***. “
“That’s what’s fun to me. I don’t like playing characters that are just the one who steers the story and is kind of the straight man of it. It’s just a little boring to me. I would rather play a b-line character that’s barely in the movie, that’s doing crazy s***”
She added that she also enjoys her “crazy girl” character Talluluah in I Love LA, and said that Season 2 is expected to start shooting in late summer.
