Olivia Wilde has spent months championing her latest directorial effort, and her ‘The Invite’ screening appearances have become a steady part of the film’s long, word-of-mouth-driven journey. The actress and filmmaker has been showing up in person to celebrate a comedy that has quietly become one of the year’s surprise success stories.

The film has been on a remarkable path since its debut. It premiered at Sundance on January 24, 2026, before arriving in U.S. theaters on June 26. Wilde directs from a screenplay by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, based on ‘The People Upstairs’ by Cesc Gay, and also stars as Angela alongside Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton.

Fans recently got a closer look at how Wilde prepares for these events. A fan account shared a short clip of Wilde getting ready for ‘The Invite’ screening in Los Angeles on September 19.

The 6-second video offers a soft, understated beauty moment. Wilde appears in a white camisole with delicate lace trim, paired with a dainty gold necklace and loose, face-framing waves. Her glowing, natural-looking makeup keeps the focus on effortless polish.

The event itself was a special one for cinephiles. The American Cinematheque hosted a 35mm screening of the film at the Aero Theatre on September 19, featuring a Q&A with Wilde and cinematographer Adam Newport-Berra, moderated by Jazz Tangcay.

The polished prep marks a noticeable shift from some of her earlier appearances. At a special Los Angeles screening at the start of the month, Wilde joined Cruz, Rogen and Norton for a decidedly casual night out. Tom + Lorenzo joked that her outfit looked like something you’d wear grocery shopping at 10 p.m., noting she stood out next to her co-stars’ more coordinated casual looks.

The film has also been celebrated in more glamorous settings. The Hollywood Times described attending an intimate private viewing of the movie inside Castillo del Lago, a legendary estate beneath the Hollywood Sign.

The story centers on a marriage on the brink. Joe and Angela’s relationship is on thin ice, and when they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbors to a dinner party, the night spirals into unexpected places. The question driving the film is whether they reignite the spark or burn it all down.

Its road to theaters was a notable industry story. The movie was one of the biggest sales out of Sundance, with A24 landing domestic rights for $12 million, and Wilde pushed for a traditional theatrical release amid the bidding war. Her instinct paid off, as 90% of opening weekend audiences recommended seeing it on the big screen, according to PostTrak exit polls.

The results have been impressive for a comedy. The film neared $40 million globally, becoming a rare summer comedy hit. “I’m grateful to see the communal experience of a comedy back in theaters — one that also resonates in a deeply emotional and heartfelt way,” producer David Permut told Variety.

‘The Invite’ is Wilde’s third feature as director. It follows ‘Booksmart’, which earned $25 million globally against a $6 million budget, and ‘Don’t Worry Darling’, which grossed $87 million against a $35 million budget.

The film’s celebration of the theatrical experience continues well beyond Los Angeles. Film at Lincoln Center has also hosted Wilde in person for a special 35mm sneak preview, promoting the event with the tagline that comedy is funnier on film.
