It’s been quite the year for Olivia Wilde, and ‘The Invite’ has turned into the kind of success story most filmmakers only dream about. Directed by and starring Wilde, the A24 comedy-drama premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24 to a standing ovation, sparking a bidding war among several studios. A24 ultimately secured the US rights, and the film has been a crowd-pleaser ever since.

The film is an English-language remake of Cesc Gay’s 2020 Spanish film ‘The People Upstairs’, with a screenplay by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones. Wilde and Seth Rogen play Angela and Joe, a couple whose marriage is on thin ice, and when they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbors, played by Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, for dinner, the night spirals into unexpected places.

With the film’s next chapter on the horizon, Wilde is back in promo mode, and she’s doing it in style. Cinethology shared 2 photos of the director and star from press for ‘The Invite’ on X. The look is all about sharp, modern tailoring. Wilde wears a light gray 3-piece suit made up of an oversized blazer, a buttoned-up waistcoat worn as a top, and matching wide-leg trousers, with her hands casually tucked into her pockets.

Her long, honey-toned hair falls in loose, textured waves, paired with soft, natural makeup that lets the monochrome suiting take center stage. It’s a quietly confident choice, trading red carpet glamour for an effortlessly cool, menswear-inspired aesthetic. The understated palette also feels fitting for a film that critics have praised for its sophistication.

The press push comes on the heels of a remarkable theatrical run. ‘The Invite’ received a limited release on June 26 before expanding wide on July 10, and the indie went on to gross more than $55 million worldwide over the summer.

Critics have been just as enthusiastic. The film holds a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus calls it a sophisticated farce that reaffirms Wilde as one of the most exciting filmmakers working today.

For Wilde, the film carries plenty of emotional weight. In a candid interview with TIME, she opened up about channeling her own pain into the project, and the outlet noted that the word “comeback” appeared repeatedly in reviews out of Sundance.

She also fought for audiences to experience it on the big screen. After the premiere, she pulled 2 all-nighters listening to pitches from studios and insisted on a theatrical release, a rare move for a comedy these days, and she now feels vindicated watching crowds laugh and cringe in recognition together.

Fans who missed it in theaters won’t have to wait much longer. ‘The Invite’ will begin streaming exclusively on HBO Max on October 23, before debuting on HBO’s linear channel at 8 p.m. ET on October 24.

The film was produced by David Permut, Ben Browning and Megan Ellison. It marks Wilde’s third feature as a director, following ‘Booksmart’ and ‘Don’t Worry Darling’. Wilde’s 2026 has been packed beyond her directing duties. She also appeared at Sundance in Gregg Araki’s comedy ‘I Want Your Sex’, playing a character that TIME described as the complete opposite of Angela in every way.

With a hit film, a streaming launch on the way and a string of stylish press appearances, Wilde is clearly enjoying a well-earned victory lap. Her latest gray suit look proves she’s doing it with plenty of polish.
