Olivia Wilde has officially addressed the internet after a viral interview clip turned her into the unlikely subject of ‘Lord of the Rings’ memes, and she handled the whole thing with more grace and humor than most people would manage. The moment began with an interview filmed at the San Francisco International Film Festival premiere of her new film, ‘The Invite’, conducted by local outlet SFGate. The footage went viral after the unusual camera angle prompted a wave of online comments comparing her to Gollum from ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

Rather than stay silent, Wilde shared a video to her Instagram Stories on Sunday, opening with her brother Charlie Cockburn asking her directly, “Care to address recent rumors you’re a resurrected corpse?” At the top of the video, she pinned a particularly unglamorous shot of herself from the interview next to a shot of Gollum, the motion-capture-animated creature from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ franchise.

Her response was characteristically self-aware and good-natured. Wilde replied with a mixture of mock outrage and genuine laughter, saying “Listen, that’s a fish-eye lens. And I admit, is that my best angle? Was that my best-ever look? No. No, it’s startling. It’s a startling image.” She was insistent about where the blame lay: “It was a fish-eye lens. I don’t know why I was so close to the camera. I didn’t have to be. That’s not the truth.”

She wrapped up the exchange by asking her brother with a smile, “Do you have any more questions?” before delivering the definitive clarification: “I’m not dead,” and covering her face with her baseball cap as the two dissolved into laughter. Wilde acknowledged the shot was unflattering but dismissed it as simply a poor angle, and sources close to her maintained her appearance had nothing to do with any health issues.

One source said, “The wide-angle lens that is circulating an unflattering photo is unfair. She’s always been skinny. She works out and eats healthy. She looks the same.” Online commenters were divided, with some piling on the jokes while others noted the camera work itself was doing the actress no favors, pointing out that fisheye and wide-angle lenses are notorious for distorting facial features at close range.

The timing of all this matters because Wilde is in the middle of what could be a major career moment. ‘The Invite’ marks her third feature as director, following ‘Booksmart’ in 2019 and ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ in 2022, and she also stars in the film alongside Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton. Wilde teared up at the uproarious reaction ‘The Invite’ received when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where Norton praised “the grace and wisdom with which Olivia gave that performance and directed us,” as reported by Yahoo Entertainment.

With ‘The Invite’ generating real awards-season buzz and Wilde clearly in a strong creative place, it is a bit ironic that a single unfortunate camera lens threatened to overshadow the whole thing. Her candid, unfiltered reaction to the viral clip earned wide praise online, with many fans appreciating that she laughed it off rather than going quiet or defensive. In an era where celebrity image control is everything, leaning into the joke, Gollum side-by-side and all, turns out to be the sharpest move she could have made.
