Olivia Wilde has spent the past few months promoting her new directorial effort ‘The Invite’, but instead of headlines about the film, she ended up fielding questions about her appearance. A red carpet photo from the San Francisco International Film Festival in April quickly spiraled into one of the more bizarre celebrity news cycles of the year, with strangers online convinced something was seriously wrong with her health.

The image, taken during her press run for ‘The Invite’, which she both directed and stars in, showed her looking unusually thin and pale under harsh lighting. It did not take long for the picture to spread far beyond the festival circuit, landing in front of millions of people who had never heard of the film at all.

That is where the screenshot circulating online comes in, with social media users bluntly declaring that she looked like “an actual dead body.” The comparison stuck, and it became the dominant conversation around Wilde for weeks rather than anything related to her actual project.

Wilde finally addressed the chaos head on during the June 17 episode of “Call Her Daddy,” telling Alex Cooper she initially assumed the photo would not even get noticed. “And then suddenly it was f–king everywhere. And I was like, ‘Oh, my God,'” she recalled.

She went on to describe just how far the speculation went, noting that people online were claiming she was sick or dying, with some even diagnosing her with Graves’ disease based purely on a single photo. She also revealed that television host Megyn Kelly did an entire segment about how dead she looked, which Wilde found more absurd than offensive.

Rather than spiraling, Wilde leaned into the humor of the situation. She explained that her friends had already joked about the photo long before strangers online did, and in funnier fashion. Her brother also got involved, filming her reaction to the backlash, a clip she later shared to her own Instagram story.

Wilde was not entirely dismissive of the criticism, though. She admitted that the picture itself was genuinely jarring, and that she understood why people reacted the way they did, even joking that she would have asked the same question herself.

Beyond the laughs, Wilde used the moment to point out a larger pattern she has noticed online. She suggested the backlash reflected a broader issue with misogyny, arguing that the internet often does not know how to talk about women’s bodies without jumping straight to judgment or alarm.

For now, ‘The Invite’ continues its promotional rollout, though this viral detour has arguably generated more conversation than the film’s marketing campaign on its own. Whether that attention translates into box office interest remains to be seen.

What do you think actually caused that viral red carpet photo to look so different from how Olivia Wilde normally appears, and do you think the online reaction crossed a line?
