Olivia Wilde’s Show-Stopping Saint Laurent Look Resurfaces Ahead of ‘The Invite’ Streaming Debut
Olivia Wilde has never been afraid of a bold red carpet moment. The actress and director has turned daring, skin-baring designs into something of a signature, from a transparent Michael Kors bodysuit at New York Fashion Week to a fully sheer Chloé gown at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party.
This year, much of that spotlight has centered on her directorial project ‘The Invite’. Wilde has made a series of memorable fashion statements while promoting the film, from a Dolce & Gabbana lace dress at its Sundance premiere in January to a backless Calvin Klein Collection dress at a London screening in July.
Now one of those looks is back in the spotlight. On October 8, fan account Crush Flix reshared photos of Wilde’s custom Saint Laurent gown from the film’s Los Angeles premiere, praising the 42-year-old for still having the same wow factor.
Wilde wore the look to the premiere at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles on June 24. The custom black gown was designed by Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello. It featured a cropped, twisted satin bodice gathered into a knot at the center, creating a deep V-neckline. A dramatic cutout stretched from beneath the bustline to below the waist.

Structured puff sleeves with ruching above the wrists added volume up top. Below, ruched hips gave way to a tiered, voluminous taffeta skirt with a floor-sweeping train. The look tapped into the red carpet’s dark glamour trend, which draws inspiration from Gothic and Victorian style cues with a modern twist. Still, it wasn’t entirely monochrome.
Stylist Karla Welch finished the outfit with Hanut Singh emerald and pearl drop earrings featuring diamond half moons. A matching emerald, diamond, and chalcedony ring completed the jewelry. Wilde wore her blonde hair in a sleek chignon, paired with glowing skin and a mocha smoky eye.
The minimal beauty look allowed the gown’s dramatic proportions to stand out. Wilde was joined on the carpet by co-stars Seth Rogen and Penélope Cruz, who wore a custom sky blue Chanel gown by Matthieu Blazy. Screenwriter Rashida Jones, who co-wrote the script with Will McCormack, also attended.

‘The Invite’ is an English-language remake of Cesc Gay’s 2020 Spanish film ‘The People Upstairs’. It follows Joe and Angela, played by Rogen and Wilde, whose marriage is on thin ice. When they invite their mysterious upstairs neighbors, played by Edward Norton and Cruz, over for a dinner party, the evening spirals in unexpected directions. David Permut, Ben Browning and Megan Ellison produced the film.

The A24 release premiered to critical acclaim at Sundance before opening in US theaters on June 26. It became a theatrical hit, grossing more than $55 million worldwide over the summer. The resurfaced photos arrive just as the film prepares for its next chapter. ‘The Invite’ will begin streaming exclusively on HBO Max on October 23, before debuting on HBO’s linear channel on October 24.

For fans who missed it in theaters, the streaming release offers a fresh chance to see Wilde’s work behind and in front of the camera. And judging by the reaction to her premiere look, her fashion moments remain just as memorable.
