One of the Biggest Horror Box Office Hits Is Now Streaming on HBO Max
With a new month here, HBO Max is adding fresh movies to its library, and one of the most exciting arrivals is Final Destination: Bloodlines. This isn’t just any horror flick, it’s one of the biggest box office hits of the year and a major event for fans of the long-running series.
The movie, released in theaters on May 16, 2025, is the sixth chapter in the Final Destination franchise. Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, it was written by Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor from a story by Jon Watts, Busick, and Taylor. This time, the story follows Stefani, played by Kaitlyn Santa Juana, a college student who starts having disturbing visions.
These visions are connected to a disaster from 1969 that her grandmother once foresaw. Her grandmother warns her before she dies that Death is now coming for their family. Alongside Santa Juana, the cast features Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, Brec Bassinger, and franchise veteran Tony Todd.
The journey to get this movie made was long. After the success of Final Destination 5 back in 2011, talk of another sequel started. In 2020, producer Craig Perry revealed that the next movie would take place “in the world of first responders.”
Later that year, series creator Jeffrey Reddick confirmed that it would, in fact, be the sixth entry. Initially, Warner Bros. planned to release it directly on HBO Max, but in March 2024, they decided to go for a full theatrical release instead. Filming happened in Vancouver between March and May 2024, though production was delayed by the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The change to a theater release seems to have paid off. Final Destination: Bloodlines has been a massive hit at the box office. As of July 20, 2025, it has earned $138.1 million in the United States and Canada and another $147.2 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $285.3 million. Not only that, it’s also the best-reviewed movie in the series.
On Rotten Tomatoes, 93% of 223 critics gave the film a positive review. The site’s consensus says, “Adding some surprising emotional layers onto the ghoulish bones of Final Destination’s mythology, Bloodlines ingeniously executes grisly set pieces with precision and turns impending doom into outrageous fun.”
Metacritic gave it a score of 73 out of 100 based on 35 reviews, calling it “generally favorable.” CinemaScore audiences gave it a solid B+ rating, while PostTrak reported that viewers gave it four out of five stars, with 69% saying they would definitely recommend it.
With numbers like these and so much praise from critics and audiences, it’s easy to see why Final Destination: Bloodlines is making noise. For long-time fans, it’s a fresh spin on the franchise that still delivers the gruesome set pieces everyone loves.
For newcomers, it’s a thrilling entry point that stands on its own. Now that it’s streaming on HBO Max, horror fans everywhere have another reason to keep the lights on.
