One Piece: Here’s Why Shanks Hated and Sliced Eustass Kid!
We at Fiction Horizon have already established that Shanks is one of the best characters from Oda’s One Piece series. The red-haired pirate is an epic badass and one of the most beloved characters in the whole series. Shanks is loved by many One Piece fans, if not all, but all the characters in the series do not love him. And while Luffy adores him, Eustass Kid has a very strained relationship with Shanks and wants to overthrow him, but has not been successful in his attempts. In Chapter 1079 of the manga, Shanks and Kid faced off again, and in this article, we are going to tell you how the fight ended.
It is not known if Shanks actually hated Eustass Kid, but Kid did hold a grudge against him, and he wanted to overthrow him. When he was willing to risk large collateral damage just to achieve that, Shanks became angry and sliced Eustass Kid with one move, after which the giants Dorry and Brogy destroyed his ship, seemingly killing Kid and most of his crew.
The rest of this article is going to focus on the relationship between Shanks and Eustass kid. Our main goal in this article is to determine whether Shanks actually hated Kid and whether he killed him in Chapter 1079 of One Piece. If you don’t know the whole story of One Piece, we have to warn you that there are going to be spoilers in the following paragraphs.
Shanks and Eustass Kid had a strained relationship
Before the recent Chapter 1079, Eustass Kid and Shanks had a very strained relationship. And while Shanks didn’t really bother too much about Kid, Kid was obsessed with overthrowing the Emperor. The first time he tried to do it, he forged an alliance with Captains Basil Hawkins and Scratchmen Apoo, but he failed miserably. He had a clash with Shanks’ pirates, where he lost his arm and gained his scars. It is still not known whether Kid got cut by Shanks himself or a member of his crew, but it is known that he did receive these injuries after his first fight with Shanks.
As time passed, the two of them didn’t really interact that much. Kid was still obsessed with Shanks, but it did not seem like Shanks cared too much about him; it did not seem like Shanks thought about him. But, the two faced off again after the Wano Country Arc, when the two crews once again clashed on Elbaf. Shanks did not want to bother himself too much with Kid, as he was hunting down Blackbeard, but Kid actually forced his hand there.

Namely, Kid was somewhat excited about the prospect of facing off against Shanks, although he was very well aware that he could die in the process. He was soon forced to fight off against Shanks’ subordinates, which is why he decided to activate his new Damned Punk ability by using his powerful railgun. Shanks uses his Kenbunshoku Haki to see into the future and observes how much devastating damage the attack could do, and decides that he would simply not allow for it.
He ordered his crew to spread out and then went towards Kid’s ship, as he ordered Dorry and Brogy to watch his back. As Kid was about to fire, Shanks appeared on the ship and, catching him off-guard, used his Kamusari and destroyed his railgun with one powerful strike, severely injuring Kid as well. Shanks then stopped as Kid’s crew rushed to see what was happening to their captain. They pleaded with Shanks not to kill him and even offered him their Road Poneglyphs in exchange.
And while Shanks really did not kill him, Dorry and Brogy, from the background, prepared to use their Hakoku attack to destroy Kid’s ship and his crew. The two giants told them, before attacking, that if one points a canon at someone’s home, they should be ready for their targets to fire back. After that, they simply eradicated most of Kid’s ship and his crew along with it, leaving their fates, as well as that of their captain, up in the air.
Kid’s fate is ultimately unknown
So, as you can see, the fate of Eustass Kid remains unknown at this moment, as is listed officially. The last pages of Chapter 1079 suggest that Kid has, indeed, died, but this might not be true. The last we see of Kid is when he was on his ship, motionless and unconscious, with his crew members pleading with Shanks not to kill him. And while the Emperor did not kill him, we saw that Dorry and Brogy did the work for him, completely eradicating a large chunk of Kid’s ship.

It is a well-known rule in anime and manga that unless we actually see a character die ”on-screen”, he probably is not dead. And while we did not see Eustass Kid die, the situation is such that Kid might actually be dead. Namely, his ship was almost completely destroyed, as Dorry and Brogy attacked its center, where Kid also was, and since nothing was left after the attack, it could very well be that Eustass Kid was eradicated along with the ship.
Another hint is the narrator’s comment at the end of the chapter, which confirms that the whole crew was not defeated but “completely eradicated,” which is a very interesting choice of words. Thirdly, Eustass Kid, while a popular side character in the series, doesn’t really compare to some other characters, and he won’t be missed that much.
Having said all of this, it does seem more likely than not that Eustass Kid finally met his end at the hand of Shanks and his crew, and the consequences of this fight will definitely be talked about in the upcoming characters. But, knowing how anime and manga work, we cannot really cross him out completely at this moment, which is why we’ll have to wait and see what Oda decides in the future.
