One Piece: Who Is Crocus & What Happened to Him?
One Piece truly has an amazingly large number of secondary characters that have appeared over the series’ two-decade run. Many of them have been forgotten because they appeared early in the story, while some have remained secondary characters that are closely related to the lore’s past. Still, they do not play a major role in the series anymore. Still, that does not mean that they are not interesting, and one such character will be the topic of this article, as you will find out who Crocus in One Piece is and what happened to him in the story.
Crocus was more important for the past than he is for the present
Crocus became a doctor and worked in his own clinic. Forty-eight years before the beginning of the narrative, Crocus met the Rumbar Pirates when they descended the Reverse Mountain from the West Blue and pointed out to them that a baby whale had traveled with them into the Great Line.
As the Rumbar Pirates left, Yooki asked him to look after Laboon, the baby whale who had followed them, until they completed their journey along the Grand Line, as it would be too dangerous for him. Crocus accepted, but the crew never returned despite the promise to return after two or three years of travel.
Twenty-two years later, Crocus encountered Roger’s Pirates, who had just descended Reverse Mountain from the East Blue. Having learned that the crew’s captain, Gol D. Roger, was ill with an incurable disease, Crocus joined their crew as a ship’s doctor to alleviate his suffering.
This way, he could also try to understand what had happened to the Rumbar Pirates. Twenty-five years before the beginning of the narrative, they encountered Shiki’s fleet. He thus participated in the Battle of Edd War.
Not long after that, the crew continued on their way to find Laugh Tale, deciphering the Poneglyphs they found on the way. Once in possession of all the information necessary to reach the last island of the New World, the crew reached it immediately. However, Buggy fell ill shortly before, so Crocus prevented him from setting sail on the final voyage. Shanks decided to stay with him.
Thus, twenty-three years before the beginning of the narrative, the crew reached the last island, where they discovered what happened in the hundred years of the Void Century, the mystery that lies behind the Will of the D., and the truth about the three Ancient Weapons. Once he arrived at the infamous treasure, Crocus started laughing with his entire crew. Precisely for this reason, they decided to call the island Laugh Tale. Roger later thanked his crew and disbanded it.
At the end of the celebrations, he was the first to abandon the ship, taking with him a bag full of medicines that Crocus had prepared for him. After returning Oden to his homeland, the doctor returned to his lighthouse, where he told Laboon that he had discovered that the Rumbar Pirates had abandoned the Great Line and would never return there. The animal, however, did want to hear that, and he told him that he understood it but had to accept it.
Laboon began to moan and bang his head on the Red Line. Crocus repeated this to him in the following years many times, but the whale never wanted to listen to him. Unable to prevent Laboon from harming himself, he used his medical knowledge to treat the wounds on the animal’s body. When he became too large, Crocus created corridors inside the whale lined with metal panels, supported by wooden pillars and illuminated. To access it, he placed a trapdoor outside following a corridor. He reached a canal, which he always lined with metal elements and equipped with side walkways and lighting.
Crocus then painted his stomach to make it look like a sky with white clouds. He also created other rooms and a large door above the left lateral fin, through which it could directly reach the stomach. To be able to stay here, since the gastric juices would have dissolved a normal boat, he equipped himself with an iron-clad one with an appearance similar to that of a small island with a palm tree and a house on it.
Crocus is alive and well at the moment
As for the present timeline, Crocus debuted during the Reverse Mountain Arc of the Arabasta Saga. He appeared not long after the Straw Hats were swallowed up by Laboon and helped them, also telling them Laboon’s sad story. He grew fond of the Straw Hats, and when Luffy reached an agreement with Laboon, Crocus noted how he was very similar to Roger.
Before they left, he also gave them a Log Pose. We saw him again briefly during the Thriller Bark Arc when we saw how happy he was for Lagoon, as the whale became overjoyed that Brook would return to him later. He also had two short cameos later, which ultimately confirmed that he is not a major player in the current timeline of the series but that he is alive and well, enjoying his retirement with Laboon.
