One Season Only: Netflix Pulls Gay Military Coming-of-Age Series After First Season
Netflix has decided not to continue the military coming-of-age comedy-drama Boots for a second season, the streaming platform confirmed on December 12. The show, produced by legendary television producer Norman Lear, debuted its eight-episode first season on October 9.
Boots tells the story of Cameron Cope, played by Miles Heizer, a closeted gay teenager from Louisiana who joins the U.S. Marine Corps with his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh) in 1990, when LGBTQ+ people were banned from military service.
The series explores their boot camp experiences under Sergeant Sullivan (Max Parker) and the challenges of navigating identity and masculinity in a restrictive environment. The cast also includes Ana Ayora, Blake Burt, Cedrick Cooper, Dominic Goodman, Nicholas Logan, Kieron Moore, Angus O’Brien, Rico Paris, and Vera Farmiga. The show is based on Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine and was created by Andy Parker.
Critics and audiences generally praised the series. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 90% approval rating, noting, “Miles Heizer’s terrific performance has the right stuff in Boots, a likable dramedy that explores masculinity and queerness to powerful effect.” Metacritic rated it 73 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews.
Despite strong reviews and respectable ratings, Netflix opted to cancel the show. Sources say the decision was complicated.
Netflix discussed the future of the show with its studio, Sony Pictures Television, and even analyzed long-term viewership numbers before making the choice. Sony TV had extended contracts for key cast members, including Heizer, Oh, Kieron Moore, Dominic Goodman, Angus O’Brien, Blake Burt, and Rico Paris, in hopes of continuing the series.
Boots also faced backlash from conservative groups and The Pentagon during the Trump administration. Still, fans celebrated its honest storytelling and representation of LGBTQ+ experiences in the military.
The show’s cancellation highlights the challenges streaming platforms face when balancing critical acclaim, viewership data, and outside pressure.
