‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 7 Could Already Be Making a Major Move

Hulu’s beloved murder mystery comedy has spent its entire run tethered to one very specific address, with the Arconia practically functioning as a character in its own right. That New York identity got shaken up in a big way for the upcoming sixth season, which sends Charles, Oliver, and Mabel across the Atlantic for the first time in the show’s history.

That shift marked the series’ most significant location change since it briefly ventured to Los Angeles back in Season 4, and it wrapped production just last week after becoming the most logistically complex shoot the show has attempted. Now, even before Season 6 has actually premiered, behind-the-scenes plans are already taking shape for what comes next.

The writers’ room for ‘Only Murders in the Building‘ is on the move too, following the news that filming for the upcoming Season 6 has shifted to London, according to Deadline. Based in Los Angeles for the first six seasons, the writers’ room will relocate to New York for Season 7, a notable shift for a production team that has never actually worked from that city before despite the show being set there.

‘Only Murders in the Building’ has not been renewed for a seventh season yet, but that’s widely expected given the show’s status as a signature Hulu series that continues performing well, recently earning five more Emmy nominations. The writing team for the likely new installment hasn’t been finalized, but some writers from previous seasons are expected to stay on, relocating to New York for an in-person room led by co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner John Hoffman.

Up until now, the show followed a consistent pattern where writers would finish a season’s scripts in Los Angeles before Hoffman traveled to New York for filming. With Season 6’s overseas shoot in London proving to be the most complex production the series has attempted, and Season 7 expected to bring the story back to New York, keeping the writers’ room in Los Angeles would no longer allow writing and filming to overlap efficiently.

Moving the room to New York instead lets Hoffman manage both the creative and production sides from a single city, a logistical change designed to keep the series on its usual yearly release cadence. It’s standard practice among streamers to commission writers rooms ahead of formal renewals as a way to shorten gaps between seasons, and ‘Only Murders in the Building’ has aimed to stick to that yearly schedule since its debut.

That schedule has already stretched somewhat for the upcoming season, with the 15-month gap between Seasons 5 and 6 marking the longest wait in the show’s run so far, compared to the roughly 12-month turnaround the series had maintained previously. Season 6 is currently slated for a December 8 release.

A rep for 20th Television, which produces the series, declined to comment on the writers room relocation when reached by Deadline. With the New York-based room now reportedly taking shape, ‘Only Murders in the Building’ appears to be positioning itself for as smooth a transition back to its home city as possible, even before Hulu makes any formal renewal announcement.

Would you want Only Murders in the Building Season 7 to return the show to New York in a big way?
