Original ‘Harry Potter’ Actor Confirmed to Return for HBO Max’s Reboot Series
HBO has announced that Warwick Davis will be back as Professor Filius Flitwick in its upcoming Harry Potter TV series. Davis played the Hogwarts teacher in the original films and will now reprise the role in the new show, set to debut in 2027.
So far, Davis is the only actor from the original movies confirmed to return in the same role for the reboot.
His comeback was revealed during the annual Back to Hogwarts celebration on September 1, an event where the franchise regularly shares major news.
Alongside Davis, HBO confirmed new casting updates for both students and staff at Hogwarts. Elijah Oshin will play Dean Thomas, Finn Stephens will take on the role of Vincent Crabbe, and William Nash has been cast as Gregory Goyle.
On the staff side, Sirine Saba joins as Professor Pomona Sprout, Richard Durden as ghostly Professor Cuthbert Binns, and BrÃd Brennan as Madam Poppy Pomfrey. For Gringotts, actor Leigh Gill will portray Griphook.
This adds to the growing list of names HBO has shared over the summer. Big castings already announced include John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
Newcomers McLaughlin, Stout, and Stanton were revealed earlier this year as the fresh faces playing Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.
The series has been in development for years. Work on the project started as early as 2021, and the vision is to create a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books that will run for a full decade. Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner, with Mark Mylod directing. Filming began in July 2025 under the working title Dark Train at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the same site where the original eight Harry Potter films were shot.
Production is expected to run through 2026 for the first season, which will feature eight episodes. The show is set to premiere in early 2027 on HBO in the United States.
The reveal of Warwick Davis returning as Professor Flitwick is a major highlight for longtime fans. It marks the first time an actor from the original series has been confirmed to step back into their old role. With a mix of new faces and familiar names, HBO’s reboot is shaping up to be one of its biggest projects yet.
