Oscar winner Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in the fifth season of HBO’s Emmy-winning crime anthology series True Detective, sources told Deadline. The new season will bring back Issa Lopez as writer and showrunner, who also led Season 4, Night Country.

Deadline reports that the upcoming season will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York. Cage is being considered for the lead role of Henry Logan, a New York detective at the center of the story. A representative for HBO declined to comment on the casting.

Cage has been interested in the part for some time, but it is still unclear if the deal will be finalized. Another Oscar winner, Jodie Foster, also took a long time to close her deal for Season 4.

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, said, “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”

Filming for Season 5 is scheduled to begin in 2026, with a planned premiere on HBO in 2027.

True Detective first premiered to widespread critical acclaim, with many naming it one of the best television dramas of the year.

The second season received mixed reviews, though the performances of Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch, as well as the cinematography and action scenes, were praised. Critics noted the plot and dialogue were weaker than the first season. The third season was positively received, and the fourth season, Night Country, has been called the most acclaimed since the debut.

The first season also set records for HBO, drawing an average of 11.9 million viewers, surpassing Six Feet Under’s 11.4 million in 2001. In February 2024, following the finale of Season 4, HBO officially renewed True Detective for Season 5 with Lopez returning as showrunner.

The next season promises another gripping story in the dark, complex world of crime, this time set against the backdrop of Jamaica Bay, New York.
