Oscars 2022 Ceremony Will Be Remembered For Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock
The Academy Awards ceremony is a special night for everyone in Hollywood and every cinephile around the world. Every year everyone is watching to see which movies will be honored in each category, and of course, awarding the Best Picture of the year is the climax. Or is it? Well, one surprising event featuring Will Smith and Chris Rock ensured that we won’t remember this year’s ceremony only because of the awarded movies.
Chris Rock, an actor and a stand-up comedian, was on stage to present the winner in the category of Best Documentary. He also threw a few jokes about the colleagues that were present in the audience. Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s short hair, comparing her to G.I. Jane. At that point, Pinkett-Smith’s husband, Will Smith, approached the stage and slapped Rock. Rock commented: “Will Smith just smacked the shit outta me”, and Smith warned him by saying: “Keep my wife’s name out your f*ckin’ mouth!”. After that, Rock continued with presenting the award, commenting that this was “the greatest night in the history of television.”
Later in the night, Will Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actor in the movie King Richard, in which he starred as Richard Williams, the father of known tennis players Venus and Serena Williams. This was the first Golden Statue for Smith. During his speech, Smith said how “Love will make you do crazy things”. He didn’t mention Rock or the incident, but he said that he hoped the Academy would invite him back for the next year’s ceremony.
