While the Oscars are frequently celebrated as the peak of Hollywood elegance, the actual dining experience for guests can be surprisingly modest. The Academy Awards became the center of social media ridicule after a video surfaced revealing the basic food boxes provided to celebrities.

Attendees at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles were reportedly given a cardboard box containing only three specific items. These consisted of a single bottle of water, a small bag of SkinnyPop popcorn, and a box of dark chocolate Raisinets.

The clip, which was shared by a staff member from InStyle, quickly went viral on X as fans reacted with disbelief. Many observers found the simple snack selection to be far below the standards expected for such a high-stakes event.

Critics online were quick to compare the meager offerings to the types of meals served on budget airlines or in school cafeterias. Some even drew parallels to the famously disappointing catering found at the ill-fated Fyre Festival.

“Oscars snack box looking like a budget airline meal,” one social media user remarked. They questioned why millionaires were being served raisins and popcorn at an event where tickets cost as much as a house deposit.

Others expressed shock that an evening of this magnitude lacked professional catering. “I’ve seen prisoners get better care packages than this,” another commentator joked, while some accused the Academy of being remarkably cheap.

The snacks were accompanied by a humorous note from the evening’s host, Conan O’Brien. He jokingly referred to the collection as a “moderately happy meal” and noted that while the snacks seemed simple, they would be incredibly expensive at a standard movie theater.

“Good luck tonight, have fun, and remember that loud, enthusiastic laughter is good for your health and my ego,” the note concluded. This attempt at humor did little to stop the wave of criticism regarding the lack of a proper hot meal for the nominees.

This is not the first time a major awards show has been called out for its food choices. Earlier in the year, the Critics’ Choice Awards faced backlash for serving a small plate of pita chips, grapes, and a few cherry tomatoes.

In a past ceremony, stars like Oprah Winfrey even refused to eat pizza that was served in paper bags. Winfrey noted that she was “not messing up my lips,” choosing to protect her makeup rather than indulge in the casual snack.

The host, Conan O’Brien, is currently enjoying a career resurgence following the success of his travel series and popular podcast. He was recently confirmed as the “host for life” in a comedic sketch featuring Robert Downey Jr. that aired during the broadcast.

The big winner of the night was the film One Battle After Another, which secured several major awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson. Michael B. Jordan also took home his first Oscar for his lead role in the thriller Sinners.

Other notable projects discussed during the ceremony included Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and the animated hit KPop Demon Hunters. Despite the hunger pangs, the night remained a significant celebration for the film industry’s top talent.
