Paramount Pictures is teaming up with Activision, the company behind the popular “Call of Duty” video games, to make a live-action movie.

The partnership will see Paramount develop, produce, and distribute a film based on the “Call of Duty” universe, which has more than 30 main games since the first one came out in 2003. The financial details of the deal were not shared.

Variety reports that the current plan is for a single blockbuster film, but the agreement also allows Paramount to expand the “Call of Duty” world into other films and TV projects in the future.

There are no details yet about the movie’s plot. The games are mainly first-person shooter titles with military themes. Some of the series, like the “Black Ops” games made by Treyarch, feature connected storylines and recurring characters.

Treyarch is preparing to release “Black Ops 7” later this year, keeping the franchise active.

This deal comes shortly after Paramount completed its $8 billion merger with Skydance, led by David Ellison. Since the merger, Paramount has made several major moves, including signing the Duffer Brothers, creators of “Stranger Things,” and spending $7.7 billion to become the exclusive home for UFC events for the next seven years.

Ellison, Paramount’s chairman and CEO, said he is excited about the project. “As a lifelong fan of ‘Call of Duty’ this is truly a dream come true,” he said.

“From the first Allied campaigns in the original ‘Call of Duty,’ through ‘Modern Warfare’ and ‘Black Ops,’ I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love. Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.”

Activision president Rob Kostich also shared his thoughts. “Throughout its history, ‘Call of Duty’ has captured our imagination with incredible action and intense stories that have brought millions of people together from around the world, and that focus on making incredible ‘Call of Duty’ games remains unwavering,” he said.

“With Paramount, we have found a fantastic partner who we will work with to take that visceral, breathtaking action to the big screen in a defining cinematic moment. The film will honor and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place, and we cannot wait to get started.”

Belloni reported last week that Paramount had originally planned to release a “Street Fighter” movie first under its new deal with Legendary Pictures. Sources say that “Call of Duty” has now become a bigger priority.

No directors or actors have been announced yet, and adapting a first-person shooter is expected to be challenging.
