Paramount Reportedly Plots a Killer ‘Dexter’ Universe with Prequels & Spinoffs

The Dexter universe has grown far beyond its original series, turning into a major franchise with multiple spin-offs, prequels, and sequels. What started as a crime drama about a forensic analyst leading a double life as a vigilante serial killer has now expanded into several shows, each exploring different parts of Dexter Morgan’s story.

The first Dexter series aired from 2006 to 2013 on Showtime. Set in Miami, it followed Dexter Morgan, a blood-spatter expert for the police who secretly hunted criminals that escaped justice. The show was praised in its early seasons but received mixed reactions toward the end, with its final episode being especially criticized. Despite this, it remained one of Showtime’s biggest hits.

In 2021, Dexter: New Blood revived the character with a new storyline. Set years after the original series. In 2024, Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel series, premiered. This show explores Dexter’s early years, including his life after college and how he developed his “code” under the guidance of his adoptive father, Harry Morgan.

A sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, is currently in development and will continue from where New Blood left off. But the franchise isn’t stopping there. Industry insider Daniel Richtman reports that Paramount wants to expand the Dexter franchise in a way similar to how Yellowstone has grown with multiple spin-offs and prequels.

He mentions that more Dexter prequels are being considered and that characters from Dexter: Resurrection might also get their own spin-off series, further expanding the universe.

We do know however that one confirmed project will focus on the Trinity Killer, one of Dexter’s most iconic enemies. Other potential series may dive deeper into the backstories of different characters from the original show.

With the success of Dexter and its recent expansions, it’s clear that the franchise has a strong future. The combination of prequels, sequels, and character-focused spin-offs ensures that fans will have plenty more to explore in the world of Dexter Morgan
